    Hi Swami
attractive as it may seem the single catalog idea will eventually hit the buffers in terms of manageability , how long it takes to load , how much memory it consumes and what machine it is running on This limit may well cater for your immediate needs but the server model because it searches across multiple catalogs and only returns the “hits” is much more efficient . You make the point that you have a vast library you want to bring in, the server model will help you share this information across multiple seats and with our forthcoming web client across the Web. Another way to look at it might be , what if GOOGLE had a single catalog that you had to load up everytime you wanted to make a search across the Web..would this be the right way to go.! But keep on going until needs dictate, The files that are saved contain only text and thumbnails so that should not limit you but don`t forget to back stuff up..

    Hi Mark

What you want to do is to enable the HTML summary panel goto Prefs > Customise details panel then check the HTML summary checkbox. This will put a new panel up on the interface .It will highlight as you desire all the “hits” for your quick search..

as soon as we get your details we can get a trial licence to you. Also thanks to Bryson and jumping in with some very astute advice..Hard won at that. We have indeed been at a Trade show all last week which means catching up with a weeks work that we missed, gradually emerging now.

February 21, 2010 at 9:14 pm in reply to: Best workflow XDCAM EX–>CatDV–>FCP?

    HI Roland
sorry for the delay in posting just getting back into the groove aftert fthe show last week. What you say is correct , you need either MXF4mac or Calibrated Softwares quicktime extensions to play XDCAM the MXF enabled version of CATDV assembles the clips and extracts the metadata..works with P2 as well.We felt that it was better to split the product as not everyone needs or requires XDCam or P2 capabilities so we have a lower price for the “Standard Pro Version” Regarding XDcam workflows search for an earlier post I wrote here about XDCAM workflows. It can be done using log and transfer which is what I did for the Volvo Ocean Race before the introduction of Mxf4Mac and Calibrated quicktime enhancers, however Native workflows without transcoding are just so much quicker and easier which is why we developed the MXF version .

    Hope this helps.

February 3, 2010 at 12:47 pm in reply to: Can’t make preview movie clips on one machine

    Hi Allan
I note you are using Metasan and have more than a passing knowledge of permissions. I have seen this error once before and that was also on a shared storage platform. My guess is you should think about this the other way round not regarding the destination but think that the “source” is busy or locked. The error report s coming from the OS not CATDV and Metasan is acting as a traffic cop and in this case it is possible that it thinks you do not have the rights to do what you want to do , hence the file busy error. Try putting the source files on a non managed local drive or wide open shared folder and set your preview to be built there too and see how you go

February 2, 2010 at 1:15 pm in reply to: CatDV integration with Maxx Digital’s Final Share

    Hi Brian
while not familiar with the Maxx Digital product I have built similar type deployments . The “problem: to which you allude is that the media is going down a private ethernet network. The situation is similar in the XSAN world where we make both a private and a public network over ethernet. You could adopt a similar strategy here.Mac Pro`s for instance have a second ethernet port just for this purpose. CATDV SERVER could be told to use this second network to keep it away from the Media network traffic which typically do not like small files. It is important to understand that CATDV server does not normally move media. It stores the paths to that media. When you query the server all that comes back are links to those files. If the Volume that contains the media is mounted on your machine it will play. So the bandwidth consumed by CATDV is very small as it is only retrieving or saving text and thumbnails.Even with ten clients you are not hammering the bandwidth. For Imacs and Macminis you may look at Apples USB ethernet devices not sure how much they cost but it would give you a second port for a MACmini . I have not tried this yet but it should be fine…Finally for ten seats of CATDV server you need to look at our ENTERPRISE product that gives you control over permissions and can set up totally distinct PRODUCTION GROUPS on the same database/server. The second ethernet port is not a requirement , things could work just fine in practice but it might be a good idea. As they say your mileage may vary.

    Hope this helps

January 27, 2010 at 6:26 pm in reply to: TC and Tape with Movie export

    Dear John
look at my previous post about Export Movies and look at the batch options and then further to EXTRA tracks and even further to ANNOTATIONS you can embed all of these values into the QTIME movie . Exactly what DSLR are you using.. check the format of the movie in CATDV to see what format it reports.

    Cheers

January 27, 2010 at 6:22 pm in reply to: Obsolete feature – consolidation

    Hi Dennis
what metadata are you expecting? Qtime has limited metadata internally. CatDV works by referencing the media and writing additional metadata to its own tables. You can cut and paste all of this to your new consolidated movies by going to EDIT > copy then select all of your re-imported subclips and then EDIT> Paste Metadata.. to selected clips Flattening you clips does not destroy your source. But I would encourage you to experiment with a copy of your media, what can that hurt and when you have gained confidence and understanding go ahead do global tagging to your hearts content. Also I would suggest having globally applied attributes you then re-visit your logging as these assetts are new media and describe what is new and discrete between your group of clips

    hope this helps

January 27, 2010 at 3:53 pm in reply to: Obsolete feature – consolidation

    Hi Dennis

Obsolete as in storage sizes have gone up and up,and the original functionality was DV related. but the functionality you seek is still available. Goto Movies Export > Movies then check Flatten then BATCH OPTIONS TAB and check Selection within Clip

If you have made subclips then they respect the subclip limits also you have options to make a single movie with all of you subclips inside it and to re-compress to another codec.. Just because it does not say CONSOLIDATE any more does not mean that the functionality has gone away…:-) also check out the CATDV help INDEX for a suprise if you still think you have been forgotten

January 22, 2010 at 8:52 am in reply to: CatDV Pro trial text export

    Hi Jenine
thank you for your kind comments..Command Up arrow should work but I think you have a pref set in the keyboard settings just go in there and deactivate it and CATDV will work fine. FCP is the same you need to deactivate F9 and F10 from its defaults to use it .. and also you are mistaken Command Z will UNDO your delete command. Just remember as Bryson has pointed out in another post that no media is deleted just the clip from the Catalog. You can drag the movie back into the browser and re-analyse it and add it back to your catalog.

    Cheers
