Your guess is as good as mine.

Perhaps the shapes were created with two circles which were grouped at some point, or there were originally more objects to the group which were deleted but the grouping remained.

If objects are imported from a different program or file format even stranger things can happen. For instance with PDF’s you may get additional clipping masks, groups, and sometimes inexplicably grouped or compound objects you can’t take apart with usual means. Often you can handle them by ungrouping, or by releasing the compound shape, multiple times, but not always.

  • So, do you want to know how to gracefully stop it when it hits a certain y position?

  • Well, then it looks you’re basically there, as long as it looks good in motion and doesn’t flutter at the edges. Just a bit more blur, which you can add to the matte.

You may want to add a “light wrap.” That is often added to a key, especially if the new background is lighter than the subject. A tutorial for technique should be easy to find.

For good in-depth tutorials, you might want to check out Lynda.com. They have complete courses and very specific and clear tutorials. They’ve got a monthly membership cost, but you can do a free trial and see if you like it.

A relatively simple way to do this is to parent the object to the hand (or null following the hand) at the “grab” point, then split the object footage into three pieces, one split at the “grab” point, another in the “release” point, then remove parenting from the first and last piece.

  • Given the original quality, that’s looking pretty good. Maybe a slight softening (blur) for the edges, then fake glass on the windows and color correction so the inside and outside look more integrated. If clouds is the final background you want to use, make the outside way lighter than the inside and color correct the inside towards blue, as the light source (sky) is cold blue. And you could add some glow to the highlights. Along these lines (I didn’t add fake glass or soften the edges):

  • Here’s the file (AECC14). You can see the track point location and size. There might be better spots for the track points, but one needs to be near the target (forehead) and the other needs to track the rotation of the head in relation to it, so somewhere near the neck is good for the second track point.

  • I did a quick test with simple two point AE tracking, one point in the inside corner of right eye and the other in the collar, and got this result. The tracking is pretty good even this way and Mocha does a better job.

Is the other object also set to Normal, 100% opacity?

As Steve said, group settings can override object level settings, so if it is grouped (even one object can be a group), ungroup it.

  • You can do this more flexibly by using three copies of same text, no need to outline them. See attached. You can then edit the text (on all three copies) or the stroke settings if you need to change it.

Use round corners on the stroke and put the thickest stroke at the bottom of the layer stack, the original at the top.

I see Twitch there also, as well as Trapcode Shine (or CC Light rays). Plus some sort of Venetian blinds -type effect on the text.

The white light streaks in the first version look like static brush strokes images animated to look like they’re in motion.
