So when visually syncing audio and video, WITHOUT something like pluraleyes, do you match the visually closed clapper to first audio click from the second sound source?

I have a different problem. I’m trying to start an edit of a short scripted film that was shot on Canon t2i and double system sound and synced in FCP. The person who initially synced the sound was off by about 2-3 frames. After syncing them, he “merged” them in FCP, then he laid out the all the clips in chronological order on a time line.
I’ve sinced nudged each take into proper sync on the timeline.
My question now is, is there an easy way to essentially re-“merge” them without having to do the synch all over again the traditional way? By going to the separate audio and video files in a bin doing it all over from scratch?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

June 16, 2011 at 9:43 pm in reply to: Editing a project on two computers (office and home)Okay, so given that I and another editor are going to edit the same project on two different computers, with two duplicate hard drives of identical media….how would I properly duplicate the MEDIA from the original hard drive to the duplicate hard drive so that I can I can view different cuts that, say my editing partner has created on the other computer.
That is to say, perhaps my editing partner will email me an FCP project file that’s been updated or changed and I assume I can open that up, re-link media and see his cut. Do I use Media Manager? Or do I just drag and drop the media and FCP project folder via the desktop.
Also, can someone explain to me, in layman’s terms, the difference between checking/unchecking the PROJECT setting, “Duplicate selected items and place into a new project” in Media Manager? I assume if you DO NOT select it, that means that original project file should re-link to those duplicated media files. I haven’t tested that out yet.

Hey Bob, I just read your advice and it is spot on (no pun intended). As an Avid/FCP editor I’ve been out of the traditional TV advertising game for sometime but I’m looking to possibly make in roads back in, so thanks.
And I was inspired to bookmark ‘Boards Magazine but I see they’ve closed up shop just about a year ago. Bummer. They were a cool mag.

Mike, what transcribing service do you use? I’d like to know.

How do you guys feel about a G-Tech “G-Raid2” connected to my iMac (2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo) via Firewire 800 for editing ProRes 145? Is it really better than, say, a single LaCie d2 Quadra drive via Firewire 800?

Todd,
Thank you so very much for the article on DoF adapters. I’ve been emailing editors at various trade mags (digital content producer, DV, Videography) to do a shoot-out of different adapters and nada. Even though your article was just a brief sketch, it was a helpful one in that it creates a basic hierarchy of how they rate. But still, I would love to see a real indepth shoot-out between the Brevis35, the Letus and maybe two others.
Cheers,

August 8, 2008 at 11:17 am in reply to: Imac and Final Cut Pro – detecting firewire (miniDV camera)Hey guys,
I had to chime in here ‘cuz I’m having very similar issues.
I have a recent iMac (bought in May 2008, 2.4ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB ram) and I’m having trouble digitizing regular standard def mini-DV footage due to dropped frames to an external hard drive. It’s a Maxtor One Touch 500gb. I’ve used the following configurations and I always get dropped frames:
Config #1-The Maxtor 500gb One Touch connected to iMac via 6 pin-9 pin cables on the Firewire 800 port. Canon ZR800 camcorder connected to iMac via 4 pin-6 pin cables on the firewire 400 port.
Config #2- Both the above camcorder AND the hard drive connected to the iMac Firewire 400 port via Firewire 6 pin- 6 pin cables using a Firewire 2-port hub.
Again, with both of these setups, I always get dropped frames. With configuration #2, at least I can digitize 30-60 second clips without dropped frames. With config #1, I can’t digitize a damn thing.
Would it make sense to connect my hard drives to the FW 400 port, and then connect my camcorder to the FW800 port with the appropriate cable?
Does using different drives really make a difference? Do the quality of how they operate really differ across brands?
Would resetting PMU and SMU be advisable as well?
