    fingers crossed then 🙂

Right, I think I understand you – I basically make a folder in my back up 2tb rushes drive called say backup, then do the backup INTO that folder so the structure will be

2tb rushes BU: backup > all folders including FCP Events.

Thus when scanning this BU drive it will only see the folder I named backup.

If this is correct then that makes sense and nice one, thank you 🙂

Will try it and see if it works out ok.

    Thanks all for the input.

And just for clarity, I use CCC to back up the whole drive, rushes n all rather than doing specific FCP X backups. I figured that through CCC i’d have the projects backed up too.

And yes, I do realise that I need to figure out how to ‘handle’ FCP X so to speak, and losing this job is a pain but it was/is only small which is why I am diving in now, to see what needs handling 🙂 So glad to have hit this snag now.

I still believe that FCP X should allow us to ‘turn off’ drives we don’t want it to see within the app. I have Event Manager X but it is a clunky way of doing this. It just seems sensible and logical to turn off drives that have no relevance to the editor. Or maybe that’s just me.

Anyway, thanks again for solving the mystery and offering tips.

yeah, see my other recent post, it looks like it is causing problems. So what do I do? Does this mean I simply cannot back up my entire work drive because FCP X is basically unstable due to us not being allowed to ‘turn off’ drives we don’t want on there?

I’ve experienced my HDD dying and losing 5 jobs which were active that I had to rebuild. Do I have to go back to not having a daily back-up?

is this not a SERIOUS design flaw?

Yeah, figured as much, but have no real idea what I have done. My Events and Projects folders are both on the 2tb rushes drive too, at root level.

All seems very weird as in theory i have set everything up correctly, so not sure why it is acting up.

    Really don’t think so.

I have tried to take a logical approach to this. All my projects and events and rushes are stored on the 2tb rushes drive, which is my 2nd internal drive on my mac. My first internal drive is partitioned for the OS and software, then other stuff on the others, and the 3rd and 4th internal drives back up the first two using CCC.

in my Event Library I deselected Group Events by Disk so all the other drives I have (which is many with partitions etc) are hidden and all that shows are the events which are on this 2tb rushes drive.

I am about to head out, but I have created another Newlon event, and associated sequences so I will see if it disappears tomorrow. Also I relinked the clip on my showreel project (again) so i will see if that delinks again.

Could it be because I am backing up the drive using CCC? Every time I load FCPX it stops and says there are 2 versions of everything and one won’t load, because of the backup drive it obsesses over reading because it appears no one at Apple seemed to think X users could possible have more than one drive, and I have to click OK or continue or some such to boot up, but I have done little bits before and never lost an Event like this.

Thanks for the input so far, and curious if anyone else has experienced this or if I have to be even more anal about where to keep my rushes and event/project folders… feels terribly fragile at the moment, which isn’t very appealing.

    same drive

2tb rushes > Final Cut Events

I do have this drive backed up by CCC (carbon clone copy) on a daily basis. But then again the other events I have created haven’t done this.

I can live with shit happening, but this is kind of serious really. I’m pretty much going to have to redo the edit, which in this case is fine as it is tiny as i am still testing the waters, but how can i move forward not knowing if my work will be there in the morning.

    ok, a thought.

I did a shoot on day 1. created my folder in my rushes drive, dropped my rushes in, created an event and did my edit.

2tb rushes > 000b_Rushes2 > Capture Scratch > newlon > newlon first shoot > *three sub folders in here

I did another shoot today and put the rushes in a folder called newlon second shoot inside the newlon folder, so thusly:

2tb rushes > 000b_Rushes2 > Capture Scratch > newlon > newlon second shoot > *three sub folders in here

Is that what could have buggered up the event location? That because I put something new in the folder FCP X threw a wobbly?

Unimpressed if so (hey, someone make this robust please) but at least would enable me to implement a workaround I suppose. It may also explain why the other clip keeps vanishing from my showreel Project/event as I put other clips in that folder too.

Hmmm. Still feeling a but Bugger!!!

what i don’t get is why this has even happened? why have a system set up where my rushes simply vanish. I don’t understand why it is so hard to set up a project, bung my rushes in it and for them to remain there. I mean every other editing software ever manages to achieve this.

Why am I sat here looking at my work going ‘where the f*** is it?’ and ‘I have to do it again!?’

Hmmm. Seriously trying to believe FCPX isn’t just for home movie people, but struggling at this precise minute, have to say.

I love this specific forum because it has become a catch all for a lot of useful information and debate and (with one exception) intelligent and informed opinion on editing and NLEs as a whole.

I find it funny when the ”change its name’ threads periodically appear, usually from acolytes with thin skins it seems.

In the end I have pitched in with FCP X mainly because OS updates were starting to make 7 dodgy on my machine and because CS6 had just as many flaws (to me) as X but all my plugins and that side of my investment worked with X.

This debate about X being a new paradigm yada yada, just don’t get it. They have chosen a slightly different way of doing stuff, renamed everything needlessly, added some cool new features but at the same time removed a load of really sensible stuff and seem to be coding it based on home users rather than long term editors (not saying it doesn’t have professional elements, just doesn’t seem designed at its core with professional real life use at its heart). So I’m here, for better or for worse (damn 8s father sending her to that convent!!!) and I really hope Apple spend the next year sorting out the stupidness that is inherent:

    +/-3db
Don’t stop playing in thumbnails when I jump forward in them
sequence tabs rather than the current limp version
Clicking anywhere on the timeline jumps to that point – have a specific area to be active and one not active for those of use mouse jockeys who click on screen to deselect stuff or just refocus ourselves
    Clear all filters/effects
Favourite filters / effects folders we can compile
Redesign the truly horrible (IMO) key framing system. I hear complaints about 7s but this one is torrid (can give many examples, not going to here, but something I do a lot and used to enjoy has now become a frustrating exercise in head/wall banging)
    Audio cross fade filter
Jump forward 1 second not 10 frames (truly truly abhor this change, actually effects me many times each edit)
Sequences (projects?) section as a list instead of this obsession with silly thumbnail film strip things so I can see 20 on the screen at once, not 4
Clips in timeline can have one image in the clip instead of multiple headache inducing images or none – great we have a choice (about 7 in fact) but why not the choice for one little image per clip – all or nothing? Really?

And so on, my list of irritations got so long I gave up.

Anyway, if it wasn’t for this forum (despite the best efforts of one individual to be as pompous condascending passive aggressive and generally irritating and nausea inducing as possible in an attempt to drive everyone away) I would never have even considered FCP X and wouldn’t have been as informed as I am.

So hopefully This forum will just remain and people will stop feeling insulted by its name. Great forum, and X didn’t change the world, just pissed a lot of people off, me included and I’m married to the little minx now.

FCP X – 2 steps forwards, 2 steps back, does a little shimmy when I wanted it to do a little swoosh
