I think the best way to create this is in Adobe Illustrator (or maybe Photoshop). Illustrator has all sorts of distortion envelopes, so you would just create a straight grid of circles, then apply an envelope. Another possibility would be to create your flat circle grid, then texture map it onto a curved surface in Element 3D or any other 3D package.

Are these Illustrator files in CMYK color mode or RGB mode? CMYK will not work in After Effects, but usually you’ll just get an error message that the file can’t be opened. Just something to check.

You are quite welcome, Evan. There’s a little bit of a learning curve to Bridge, but the basics are very intuitive. Here’s a video tutorial aimed a bit more at the motion graphics / video artist:

There’s a fair amount on the tv.adobe.com, but it always seems oriented to the Photoshop user and photographer, yet Bridge is extremely powerful at managing huge amounts of files of almost any sort. And the newer CC versions of Bridge allow you to install it as a freestanding application, without having to have other CC licenses on your machine.

Oh, and by the way, Evan, there’s a somewhat hidden feature in Bridge which will make you feel like Superman when you’re trying to find the AE project that your output clips came from. I use Bridge daily to manage thousands of files as a freelancer now – I also used it as art director at a broadcast facility to manage hundreds of thousands of files. But as Mike say above (and I reinforce in my article), organizing your project folders is the first step. The beauty of Bridge, to me, is the ability to create Smart Collections, which will update automatically as you add files which fall under the search parameters. It makes life much easier…

I’m all on the side of plain and simple. When I was first getting my company going, I used a contract of the phonebook variety. I almost lost a job with what turned out to be a big, long running client when he looked at the massive contract and said “I’m not going to sign that!”. We simplified from three pages to three paragraphs, and the client signed, and we never had any legal problems with him. I guess if you see something coming in the early meetings, it’s good to have it referenced in the contract, but you can’t cover everything without making the client bring their lawyer in, which isn’t a great way to start out a relationship…

That shouldn’t be an issue, but I wonder whether the NLE software on the Prius dashboard is superior to that on the Ford? I think the Ford NLE has tracks…

You could do the 3D curve in Element 3D by just using a large sphere, then applying the arrow with an alpha as a custom texture map
