  • You’re seeing the tiny difference between the selection and the selected. Do you see this at 100%? Try doing a selection, then feather 1px, then copy to a new layer.

  • Probably the print driver. Try switching between letting Illustrator/InDesign have print control and your printer. Odds are pretty good switching the printer is the culprit. You can also try exporting the multipage output to PDF and see if there is any scaling. Try printing to another printer, too.

I’ll guess that you’re trying to send it to a printer or something then. First, see if they have an FTP area you can send it to, that’ll fix it right there: follow their directions and you may hav eto download a free FTP app. You can also leave a copy on Google Drive or a similar service. If you have a website, you can FTP it to your site and then send them a link. You can also use a cloud or other off-computer service.

If not, you have to reduce the file in Illustrator. Convert all of your fonts to outlines, expand whatever can be expanded, remove any tracing art or other images in the file that have nothing to do with the final image. Remove copies of things that are hidden in the background. Expand all of your blends, pathfinder stuff, rasterize any raster effects, etc. Vector files should be fairly small for the size unless you have a lot of 3D or effects that take a long time to render, I suspect you have some things in the file you don’t need. You can also flatten art on a layer by layer basis or even bring all layers together in one layer and flatten.

If you don’t have illustrator, load it in photoshop at the source size (18×24) at 300dpi limited to the artboard, but if you need bleed, leave some space for bleed. Save as a PSD file first – It’ll be really big. Flatten whatever can be flattened and save as a CMYK TIFF with compression but NO LAYERS. Re-open the Photoshop file and convert to RGB and save as a JPEG with max quality (12). Those are the basics, you should be able to get a version or 2 that’s the right size. If not, try FTP or another large file archiving and access system.

I was gonna suggest either the small PDF setting or, if you have InDesign, save the file in AI as a PDF-compatible file, then place it on a letter-size page for output. OR, try loading in in Photoshop as a much smaller doc (reduce from 300 dpi to 72). You can also try exporting as a JPG at 72 (or less) dpi.

  • Honestly, the new version is worlds cheaper: I pay $30 a month (I bought a couple CS versions in my time) and I get ALL of Adobe’s software. I use PS, AI, AE, Lightroom, InDesign, etc., etc. So, at $30 a month, I pay $360 a year. What does photoshop cost by itself? Even at $50 a month ($600 a year), it’s a bargain. Plus, I have all the updates right when I want them and I’m on CC with most stuff right now. Mine still works without internet (though I’m usually connected). I’m starting to see this model pop up all over the place in graphics software. Won’t be long before most are on it.

  • Well, good to hear! I agree, I don’t think it needs to be XML, BUT I know a lot of programming languages have XML features and functions built in and XML code is easier to parse and read since it can be neatly self-documenting. I used to write code for Excel VB so I’m used to cells, rows, and columns and I never really did XML. Also, XML is just a text file and can be parsed by any software while JS requires a translator or reader to function. I could be way off, too, since I’m no coder (anymore).

July 20, 2013 at 2:34 pm in reply to: Pantone Color Inquiry

Well, without going into too much detail, Pantone colors are about the same whether coated (C) or uncoated (U). Oddly, it refers to the type paper used – coated means the glossy, shiny paper used for magazine covers or posters and uncoated is sort of like regular bond or copy paper.

I use coated for my RGB stuff because coated paper does NOT absorb ink and the color stays on top and more vibrant while uncoated paper will absorb the ink and produce slightly muted tones. Also, most Pantone colors will simply not reproduce with RGB or even CMYK colors. You’ll get close, but that’s it. Since you already have the RGB values, you may try switching to the Adobe 1998 or another “wide-gamut” RGB space in photoshop before saving out as JPEG or PNG, but make sure to test on a variety of monitors since colors can shift widely from monitor to monitor.

July 19, 2013 at 10:23 pm in reply to: Photoshop cs6 3d materials on separate meshes??

Well, I don’t know what help I will be. I use Blender for 3D (I’ve used most of the current apps, but I actually like using Blender).

    Here’s what I did:

Imported the original file you sent into Blender, grouped everything, then re-exported as a 3DS file. Placed the image on a default Photoshop size file (switching to 3D mode). Issue with materials is still present. Created a copy of the current layer (this will eat up RAM and I crashed a couple times while doing this next part), deleted everything but the cushions then made the cushions from the original invisible, changed colors and voila! It worked on render!

The default color is that flat gray – so I tried coloring the object in Blender first and renamed colors (ie: wood, cushion, etc.), then re-imported and it comes in with the correct colors.

Soooo, I think the issue is Photoshop. Perhaps some models don’t let you do much editing? Since there’s no way to create new materials, I’m guessing you have to group the objects and apply the materials 1 at a time or at least give individual materials different names so Photoshop can reference each material one at a time. 🙂

    Hope this helps!

  • What format is the model in? Do you see the current texture listed in the 3D layer? Should be able to double-click them. If there are no textures, they may not have loaded correctly.

Can you upload the model for testing? I have CS6 and CC here.
