I am currently in the same dilemma as you except my budget is at $4000. But for that I need everything: camera, lenses, tripod, audio.
I have almost decided on the T2 because of the price. The only things holding me back are:
– The 12 minute file limit. It scares me to think of doing a project for a speaker or a band and hoping the song wraps up soon, or the speech doesn’t go long, or the person you are interviewing who is really getting deep into the subject shuts up pretty soon because it is getting close to 12 min.
-I have done a lot of research and these cameras seem to be great for films projects where you have ample time to set up the shot. I am hoping that I am able to shoot more documentary style on it. More shooting on the fly, but still get great images out of the camera.
-The 7D, although virtually the same for video purposes, has a reputation as a quality camera, where the T2 doesn’t yet. Sometimes clients care about that stuff.
All that being said I am still very excited about purchasing a T2. I was saving up for a Sony Ex3 ($12,000 when factoring in all components) and now I just want to get a T2 and get to shooting.

Did you get an error? Did the program shut down?
Premiere has froze up on me when I am trying to do very complex things. I would assume you are looking at a RAM issue. My suggestion would be to use After Effects for that kind of work. It is more suited to and “Effect” like that.

Do I understand it correctly that the 7D is able to shoot 60fps, which when played at 30fps, is essentially overcranking? If the T2 does not have that frame speed, it might be worth the extra money. Esepcailly if Darrell Boeck is right and I can save more with used lenses and an adapter(although you do loose some funcitonality with an adapter).
Also is there a big difference between 7D and T2 in terms of overheating. Hypothetically if I want to shoot documentary style and have the camera rolling alot, would that be a problem with the T2?

I in the process of research a T2i setup. Is Image Stabilization a must of the lenses?

But, lets all remember that the image is everything. If I have to work harder to pull focus or hold the camera in awkward position, then I do it. If the alternative is a lower quality image.

This might be off topic. But I have been editing native mp4 on Premiere Pro CS3 for quite a while now. (At least I think I am). I pull the BPAV folder into the project. Premiere will tell me it cannot recognize the extraneous xml and bim files, then it imports the mp4 files just fine.
I have done multiple projects like this. Am I wrong? -
Thank you, I will give that a try. I was hoping that the way Adobe links all their projects I could keep the footage native, but looks like I will have to do some do some exporting.

If you want to get deeper into it, the Three-Way color corrector is an excellent tool. It is not as quick and easy but you can adjust color correction seperately in shadows, midtones, and highlights.
