Have you played with the iOS app for the GoPros? The latest update allows you to monitor the cameras during recording (though with a 3-5 second delay) via their wifi signal.

I know that doesn’t help you in your situation but if your clients didn’t *need* to see a composite of all 4 angles on one monitor then you could just set up 4 iPads next to each other with the GoPro app running and each iPad logged onto a different camera (could even mount them with velcro). 4 iPads won’t be cheap, but you would also avoid long HDMI cable runs from those cameras and having to get a switcher or separate monitors, so maybe it would balance out.

January 4, 2014 at 8:06 pm in reply to: Any Matrox to Blackmagic switchers here?

Thanks for your info, Glenn! In terms of “using at the same time”, I just meant being able to use it with different NLEs on the same driver since the MXO2 can’t output to both FCP7 and CC apps on the same one. Good to know about auto-switching the display though, as I plan to work with Premiere and AE open at the same time when dynamic-linking between them. Am I right that Resolve will NOT output to a monitor unless it’s a Blackmagic device?

Do you miss the quicker compression with MAX at all?

  • I figured as much. Thanks!

July 24, 2013 at 10:19 pm in reply to: Audio is slightly longer than video on export?

    UPDATE:

The outlet just told me that the audio bit depth (24-bit) may have contributed to the problem. Would the bit depth actually make the audio run a second longer?

Yup, that just happened to me. Pasted a sequence from a previous version of the project into a new one and lost audio in two of my music tracks. The waveform area just showed up as a brown nothing when the clips were expanded; right-clicking and re-enabling the audio channels fixed it!

Actually, shouldn’t we be asking Harold Camping about this? He’s usually right on the money when it comes to predicting dates…

Can you draw a custom mask over the footage, using the pen tool? Use the rulers and guides to measure every point so that you get a a proper polygon.

[Dave LaRonde] “…actually 23.976, and that’s the frame rate at which you’ll want to work in AE. Do otherwise at your great consternation and frustration.”

Ooh, good to know. I had assumed that AE would know what to do with a 23.98 setting. Regarding media, I have all my clips duplicated between a RAID at the office and a G-RAID at home; I’ll swap updated project files and FX shots via the laptop or DropBox if necessary.

Here’s another question: if I want to update my edit in FCP after I’ve been working on the XML export in AE, is there any conform function in AE to accommodate a new edit? Does Automatic Duck do that? I don’t really want to show the client anything for approval until there are effects added and it looks about 90% there. Otherwise, they’ll just be approving an edit with a guy in front of a green screen and I don’t know if they can wrap their heads around that. So if they make changes down the road I’m just wondering if I can jump back into FCP easily or not…

    Thanks Dave.

I’m pretty familiar with Primary/Secondary color correction, but I usually use Apple’s Color. I was thinking this might be a good project to do the color work within AE for the first time, using Red Giant’s Colorista; I don’t think I want to roundtrip back out to Color afterwards (FCP>AE>Color) unless someone recommends it. And yes, I’m working in Apple ProRes (footage was shot on Canon 7D HDSLR and converted).

Funny you should mention it, I am typing on a laptop with 4GB of RAM right now, but only because I’m working from home. I can cut in FCP no problem, but I do plan on doing all the major AE stuff on the tower in my office.

    EDIT: the plot thickens!!

I just swapped the IOHD back over to the MacPro but I switched to the FW800 port on the FRONT.

    Works fine.

Methinks I done killed the FW port in the back.
