It worked for us on a new iMac. When you install X on a system with FCP7, it moves FCP7 into a folder within the applications folder. Everything is still there. If you’re doing a clean install of Lion, why not try it and see what happens. If it doesn’t work, do the partition thing.

We just don’t run into any issues, so I don’t see why you would either.

Maybe I’m crazy, but I don’t totally get this whole snow leopard partition thing anymore. It feels like it’s a legacy concept from back in the days of Tiger and doesn’t so much apply to current OSX. We run Lion only on multiple systems with no problems. I installed the trial for Avid on one of our systems that also contained FCP7 and nothing bad happened. The same system also has FCPX, and nothing bad happened…

Seems like running old OS’s with various partitions would cause more problems than it solves. Just my 2 cents.

Everything I’ve seen thus far looks like massive improvements, especially in regards to AE. I can’t tell you how happy I am to no longer complain about lack of extruding. Seriously can’t wait to drop a 3D logo over a bent, flat image behind. Something tells me that we’re going to see lots of that in the future.

Couple of questions:
1. Does Premiere Pro 6 have an option for adjustment layers similar to how they work in AE?
2. Will PPro or AE now allow for multiple open projects simultaneously? Not importing, but actual separate projects open?
3. Can independent audio clips in PPro have their levels adjusted as in FCP without affecting the whole track?
4. Do the 6750M AMD enhancements also apply to iMacs containing that card?

We did an experiment with an iMac 3 months ago. After you get the big Promise Pegasus you’re looking at about 5k. We got all the big upgrades except for the SSD, which just seems overpriced for me. It’s a great machine and has been very robust with everything I’ve thrown at it. Very curious how the 6750M card is going to play with the new CS6 suite.

I would say that if you’re considering this, try to wait. There’s a new iMac update soon, potentially without the glossy screen. That would be a nice update.

We’re in LA and use a guy named Matt Sell who has been great – and a little easier than Fractured Atlas was to deal with (they’re east coast based). I’m not sure if he does production insurance (we usually just buy that for a day), but everything else has been really affordable and easy, especially when we needed additionally insured certificates (which he turns around crazy fast).

Maybe I’m insane, but my Promise p6 was already pre-striped RAID5 and ready to rock when I purchased it in December. It gets read/writes in the 550MB/s range. I bought directly from Apple – maybe theirs come striped ahead of time? The was no initialization time.

I love our new iMac. With promise pegasus it’s pretty screamy. If I could wait till June at this point, I would. Look at Mountain Lion – the interface is adding simple buttons like on an iPad. Best case scenario the iMac update is massive and includes a touchscreen interface and an all new design. Worst case it’s incremental, but you’d at least be confident knowing you had the most up to date iMac.

Rumors have said all products were getting somewhat dramatic overhauls this year. Rumors don’t always come true though. Even the truly wise cannot see all ends.

I run Logic fine with Lion. Perhaps you should reinstall Logic and run software update.

You can put 3 or 4 Tb drives in there if you’d like. Macsales.com is pretty helpful about telling you which RAM and drives will fit in your particular model mac pro. I get all my RAM there. They also have helpful videos on how to install them.

I’ve built quite a few RAIDs at this point so I wasn’t going into it green. I actually enjoy the process usually, but this time I was that one in a million guy who got a defective card. ATTO pretty much wrote me off as of last Wednesday, so believe it or not I’m thankful that I have Amazon’s protections in place to return this card.

You’re right in that people who are completely new to it should go through a VAR, at least until Mac Pros get Thunderbolt. After that happens I can’t imagine why anyone would need to buy these types of cards, aside from large server setups.
