I’ve got a Mac G4 to read cards for our HPX170(along with the hateful Duel Adapter for client’s computers), MacBook Pro with PCD20 5-card reader for our HPX2700. As a rental house, it would be great if the client would pay to rent the PCD20–not likely. We will buy the PCD2 for the HPX170, I’m pretty sure. Even the Qio is a bit pricey for a $4K camera, certainly couldn’t justify sending a PCD20 out with a 170 for no extra charge.

    Javier,

Have you ever watched a pan in a film based motion picture? 24fps will not have the smooth motion of 60fps. The electronic shutter in a video camera set at twice the frame rate will help eliminate smearing, but can’t make up for the lack of temporal resolution of 24fps vs. 60fps. Those who want a film look shoot 24fps, those who want that video news/sports/soap opera look shoot 60fps(or 60 fields per second.)

When shooting 720/24p, it is 24p over 60p at the HD SDI output and recorded onto the P2 cards. In post, you need to do a 3:2 pulldown to get rid of the redundant frames. When shooting 1080/24p, it is 24p over 60i, and, again, the redundant frames are thrown out in post.

The best approach for P2 recording of 720/24p in DVCPRO HD and AVC-Intra is to shoot in Native mode, where only the actual frames needed are recorded onto P2. In 1080/24p, Native mode is available in AVC-Intra, but not in DVCPRO HD. In all cases, there is no Native mode via HD SDI out, as most display devices would no accept a 24p Native signal. 720/60p and 1080/60i are the only official HD formats for delivery in the U.S.

Recommend you read some of the Panasonic white papers. I also recommend you shoot in AVC-Intra 100, which is a progressive Native codec. Dump the FS-100, buy adequate P2 card capacity and quality and reliability will be improved.

    Javier,

You cannot use QT PN with 1080/60i. Native mode only works with 720/24P and 30P. Make sure VFR is off. I don’t know what that “Stop Frame” setting is for on the FS-100 you list. Make sure, if shooting 24P or 30P, that you set the camera’s shutter to 180 degrees(half) or 1/48th, 1/60th, respectively.

If shooting 720/60P, I don’t see using the shutter as necessary. It will just penalize you on light level more than 60P already does, as well as make the image to live looking, which 60P also already does.

You will be using your cards memory up at a rate of 1Gb per minute, whereas shooting 720/24P would be 2.5Gbs per minute, 30P around 2Gbps.
Much more recording time than 60P, faster transfers, more flimic motion.

    From a Panasonic press release:

Panasonic’s DVCPRO HD has already been decided upon as the recording format for the 2010 Winter Games. The company will deliver large numbers of broadcasting equipment such as the P2HD series, a solid-state memory news gathering system. The 2010 Winter Games is the ninth Olympic Games in which Panasonic’s digital technology has been used as the recording format since the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games.

Broadcast equipment supply for the venues

    Equipment Quantity
P2HD/DVCPRO HD Recorder Approx. 160 units
P2HD Camera Recorder Approx. 50 units
    Monitors Approx. 600 units
Multi format live switcher 12 venues, 16 units

Yes, FS-100 is DVCPRO only, AVC-Intra does is not output via FireWire from camera. Make sure camera’s frame rate is NOT in a Native mode, or FireWire output won’t be active.

I don’t own an HPX300, have only used my FireStores with my HDX900 and HPX170. Here is my setup for an HDX900/FS-100(don’t know how much is the same for an HPX300):

PANASONIC HDX900 w/FIRESTORE FS-100 using Quicktime PN mode

    Menu setup of HDX900:

    MAIN MENU>SYSTEM SETTING>SYSTEM MODE: 720/59.94P

    MAIN MENU>SYSTEM SETTING>CAMERA MODE: 24P*

    OPTION MENU>OPTION>FRAME RATE UB: MENU

MAIN MENU>VTR MENU>TC/UB>VITC UB MODE: FRAME RATE

    Switch Position of HDX900:

    TCG: F-RUN**

*720/30P also available for PN mode
**TCG: F-RUN only for 24P, TCG: F-RUN or REC RUN for 30P

OPTION MENU is accessed by pressing the MENU button while holding down the LIGHT button simultaneously.

    Menu setup of FS-100:

    1. HDD MODE>DVCPRO HD

    2. DV FORMATS>QUICKTIME PN

    3. SETUP>TC EXT

    4. SETUP>VFR MODE>24P***

    5. CONTROL>TAPELESS

***720/30P also available for PN mode
Note: VFR mode will default to OFF at power down, must put back to 24P.

For Record Status, Press DISPLAY button to see; “720/24P”, matching TC numbers w/Camera, “VF” mode.

PRESS STOP BEFORE POWER DOWN AFTER ANY RECORDING

    End of shoot: (optional)

    6. UTILITIES>MAKE REF MOV. (combines clips longer than 2:18ea)

You are outputting DVCPRO HD, not AVC-Intra?

Lite Panels Mini LED. 5600K, can drop an 85 filter in. I think there’s a flood and spot version. Pricey, but nice quality of light and low power/low heat.

  • John,

Yes, shooting with a 5D at wide open or close to it is fine, as long as:

    a. talent does not move
    b. camera does not move

This assumes a longer focal length lens, like an 85mm.

How do you like shooting hand held with the 5D, or following moving subjects?

The best thing about my Letus Ultimate 35mm DOF adapters is that I can take them off of my video cameras.

  • I would think it would depend on the acquisition specs of the broadcast or cable entity, how much low light shooting there is, how much movement of talent and camera movement. Some cable networks don’t allow VDSLR to be used for more than a small percentage of a program, won’t allow camera movement.

5D Mk 2 has a full frame 35mm sensor, which means a VERY shallow DOF, requiring you shoot f4.0-5.6. A Pro35 or Letus is Academy framing, so DOF not as shallow(but still requires an AC for talent movement). HPX500 with Pro35 or Letus B4/Ultimate should still be around an ASA 400, so not too bad(depends on frame rate, gamma, resolution, taking lenses). 5D Mk 2 has rolling shutter artifacts, aliasing and moire artifacts vs. 500 CCD’s which are pretty free of artifacts.

DVCPRO HD will offer 4:2:2, I-Frame, 24P, no rendering time, no intermediate codec. 5D would require ProRes for FCP, that’s a lot of transcode time, big files. 5D Mk 2 does not do 24P yet.

If I was shooting a lot of handheld, I’d prefer the ENG camera form factor over the VDSLR form factor. 500 viewfinder isn’t too great for critical focus, though.

I know the 500/Letus B4 relay lens/Ultimate DOF adapter works well together, but you won’t be low profile with the large camera/lens size. Audio won’t require double system with the 500, P2 workflow is simpler and the camera can shoot a long time non-stop with 4)P2 cards. But, you can’t beat the 5D price–except with 7D or Rebel T2 or GH1.
