I’m with Mark. At the agency where I work we also handle PR and Crisis Communication so we are careful not to do something reckless in video that will cause a PR issue, like copyright infringement. I also don’t think you will be able to get away from it for long. The YouTube creepers will eventually catch it and no right holder will want their material on an ad that is generating revenue for someone and not be paid for it.

I really like Mark’s comments. One way to see this is that you have been having trouble with marketing and this is business that comes to your doorstep. If this relationship works out, you may even have the opportunity to tap into some special skills they might have for one of your projects.

Check out Videoblocks.com. It’s not the highest quality footage, but they have some real construction stuff in there. If you see a few clips you like you can just created a free seven day account and download all the stuff you want (it’s a retainer based, download all you want model). If you want to quit though, just be sure to cancel before they hit your credit card.

iStock is terrible to search on, but they have a track every once in a great while I will use. If you do a lot of super cheap work you can get a Videoblocks subscription and get some stuff there. I’ve also bought a couple libraries at Stock20.

We have been employing a similar workflow and are looking ahead to upgrade as well. I’m also looking at an LTO with CatDV to manage and track the media. A couple other reasonable options that we have been keeping our eye on is the Sony Optical Disk Archive. Moviola.com has had Sony reps to do webinars on it, I’m sure you can grab a free one there somewhere.

For tracking assets, I’m not sure how detailed you want to get. I really liked a lot of what CatDV could offer, but we also have looked at buying a copy of Filmaker and building our own database, that way we can track internal projects. That route makes a lot of sense because we are more than just a video production house, we are a full service ad agency, but if you need something bigger and custom (With a bit of a learning curve), it might be an option.

[Mark Suszko] ” the typical thing is to add a time code window in an obnoxious spot somewhere on the screen”

Yea, add time code. That’s a great idea. For the watermark just make or grab a quick, cheap logo and make it translucent by lowering the opacity. Better yet, find an overlay mode that works well with your logo and play with the opacity from there.

The one example that comes to mind for me was the last Arrested Development season they did for Netflix. They did a lot of shots from the previous seasons and put that watermark on it, pretending that they used software that they had not purchased to rip the show. The joke didn’t go over very well, but it’s a good example all the same.

[Tim Wilson] “You may also have heard about that “film look” thing. Apparently one way to get it is by shooting film. :-)”

    Haha!

They should really explain their unique needs better to attract the right shooter. Regardless of their reason, they have to assume photographers will laugh when they see G placed directly after F.

    f) Keep darkrooms and photo equipment clean and in good repair.
    g) Keep abreast of latest films, tools and technologies.

I work a lot with comedy, to me that is the punchline.

Great film history and education Mark!

This is also a great reminder to work through a company. I don’t know what your situation is Aaron, but it’s always good to operate through a company. I know here in Arizona it is simple to set up an LLC to give you some more protection in certain areas.

Willem, I use the same method you do for a lot of clients. I agree that Vimeo has become much better, but they still are not there yet. I have particularly noted that longer videos (say, over ten minutes) start to have the drag issues or latency or flat out clog issue. But for the price with the password protection, space, design and so on it is hard to beat.

Ron, your company sounds pretty interesting, I will have to check it out.

Depending on what you are looking for there are a lot of training/Adobe Certification classes that offer inclusive packages on airfare/travel expenses that look nice and tidy for your employer, if those interest you.
