My 1,1 with a 5770 graphics card works pretty well. I’m definitely ready to upgrade to the new macpro. Personally, I would buy a new iMac over something like a 1,1 or a 3,1 for FCPX.

A Mac Pro 1,1 machine cannot be upgraded beyond 10.7.X. You should make sure the older machine you are interested in can run 10.9 first.

Seriously though, macs and PCs have been leapfrogging each other for how long now? What is the point of this conversation again?
Though I am learning some things about the current state of GPU cards, CPU, etc. more generally.

Define the top 5-10%. Income? Income/expense ratio? Broadcast? Feature Films? Top number of views on YouTube? Client satisfaction? Personal happiness? Name recognition? Number of posts on Creative Cow? Who gets to decide this?
If I make $2500/week (minimum) for a 40 hour week living in a rural area near Seattle, how does that compare to making $3500/week in New York? I bet my income to spending ratio is better where I live. I pay all of my essential personal and business bills in a week and a half here (including my home mortgage). There’s a lot of variables in asserting who is in the top 5-10% of the pro workforce.
My perspective is that the inroads that FCP legacy made have not vanished, they have diversified. Specifically, AVID isn’t really on the map much where I live anymore… it’s not AVID, none of the time, and less so than it has ever been.

Hey, that’s why I prefer FCPX as well. Which editor today cannot connect to shared storage or to a client monitor? Premiere?

I’ll definitely try your suggestion out… though at the moment I cannot get the Adobe Creative Cloud app installer to initialize. It freezes immediately.
Fortunately, my CS6 apps are working fine again. So, I can keep working until Adobe works the bugs out of CC.

Actually, I’m pretty sure I know who Andy is, though I won’t say. If I’m correct, than he is quite experienced. And pretty right on the mark a lot of the time, if you can get past his rough edges.
I think he is a perfect match for this particular forum.

Feels like FCP7 to me (though more robust in it’s handling of modern codecs).
