You didn’t mention the camera used. If it’s Red, good luck with that. Colotrace doesn’t copy the metadata. It’s a bug, that I reported a short while ago.
So, back to the original dilemma. How to manage versions, simply and efficiently?
How about bringing the whole versions and timeline concept out of 1980s to a year 2013?
First, we need to get rid of Master Timeline pronto. Don’t need it.
Create a timeline, using XML, EDL, AAF, take your pick.
Grade it. Now we need another version of that timeline. Simply create a new copy of graded timeline and name it appropriately. Do the changes to the new timeline, without worrying that the original will get affected.
Now the good part starts. You get a new edit and a new version of XML, EDL or AAF. Import it as usual and a new window pops up, asking which timeline Resolve should inherent grades from? Pick the appropriate timeline and you’re done. BTW, you still should be able to create a “local” versions of grades of the individual shots on a given timeline, like director’s version, agency, approved etc. Selecting it means it will be rendered and inherited by the new conform.
    Simple…
And BTW, I’m not reinventing the bicycle, I just simply described the FilmMaster way of managing versions.

  • I’ll be honest, I don’t care how it’s done, as long as the Offset is mapped out to a trackball, any trackball.
But as I said, I find Highlight and Midtones pretty useless and I personally never use them, unless it’s only by mistake.

No need to wait. Macs right now support all modern GPUs without modification right out of the box, provided you run OS 10.8. There is even support for new Titan cards in upcoming 10.8.4.
Just get a single GTX 680 and your dilemma solved. No need to re-plug cables and Resolve will thank you. No need for second GPU and you get another slot free!
    Win all around.

  • Thanks Mike.
Contrast/Pivot controls are now mapped out in V.10.
Said that, if I remember correctly, in V.10 Contrast/Pivot controls are on different page from the Master Offset, which again, makes no sense. All three adjustments needs to be adjusted interactively and the way it’s set up now, you’ll have to jump back and forth between pages.
Nevertheless, exposing Contrast/Pivot controls is a step in right direction. As they say, the needle had finally moved. I just would like to see just a bit more and in the right direction…

Well, that wasn’t the dilemma of the original poster:-)
His problem was using GT120 for the GPU processing with FCPX. I just suggested the simplest fix without resorting to a major card replacement.

It’s called a mini display to DVI adaptor, if you need to connect two displays.
    A slice of color…

Before launching FCPX unplug your GUI cable from GT120 and plug it into GTX285. When you want to go back to Resolve, reverse the operation. No computer restart required.

April 24, 2013 at 8:20 pm in reply to: Possible bug in Colotrace with RED material.

Yes, that’s exactly what I ended up doing.
I feel, that this is the same bug, that was affecting the inability to manipulate the metadata in remote grading. That bug had been fixed now in 9.1.3. I guess now there are still two bugs left, the color trace bug and an inability to un-do the metadata change.
I’d like to see all that fixed in V10, especially the un-do thingy…

April 11, 2013 at 9:51 pm in reply to: What OFX plug ins for DaVinci 10 will you get?

As far as I remember, there are specific OFX versions of Sapphire for Baselight, Scratch, FimMaster, Smoke etc. Obviously OFX version are much more expensive, than the ones for AE:-)
Scratch’s integration with Mocha is a simple script. There is nothing proprietary in that and nothing would prevent BM from doing the same. I talked with Mocha people about Resolve integration and they asked me, if I would help them in putting then into contact with BM. I even passed the card from Mocha engineer to one of BM higher ups. Will see… As far as using Mocha in Resolve, I can’t say much right now. But I can say, that soon you may not need Mocha at all. Sorry for being so cryptic:-)
The same goes for Neat Video. There will be no reason to use it or to pay for it. That is unless you’re still using resolve Lite. The built in temporal noise reduction in resolve promises to be of top notch quality.
Actually OFX plugins open a new pandora box.
First, the quality built of OFX plugins may affect the stability of Resolve. That’s the price of opening the platform to third party developers.
Second. What happens with Remote Grading. Let say you want to use a plugin. Do you ask the other party every time you want to use a plugin, if they have that plugin. Do you ask what version of plugin they are running? What happens, if you try to use it and it’s not there or if it is wrong version? Will the session get terminated at that point, like it does with wrong version of Resolve? Or your Resolve will crush? All of a sudden, it’s doesn’t sound that appealing to those, that use resolve for Remote Grading….
