  • You might indeed have more experience than I do, however I do recall reading at least two articles that pitted comparable units of Promise and Active together and Active was better. Putting that all aside, what issues should I be looking out for that your clients had? They had a good reputation from the people I talk to and from me, considering I am a customer. Add to that Bob Zelin’s sound recommendation and they couldn’t be all that bad.

  • Have to disagree that their stuff was slow. It might not have been the fastest but it was proven to be faster than Promise which many people recommend and yes, it was and still is reliable.

Actually, in my case, the DV codec is the limiting factor. The stuff it does with Reds sometimes is ridiculous. I am looking to get, if possible, better than 4:1:1 (even if it is only a slight improvement). I mentioned that the Aurora hack is not an option since it would cost more money and is no longer available. I have the capability to capture direct s-video out from the DVX without spending any extra money which is why I am looking at that as an option.

Personal experience nothing is better than a PhC but I have found company engineers to be quite honest. Give GV a call.

Depending on your Internet connection you can indeed play back raw HDV material.

Bob and Softron are playing it safe. You can get away with less than 12 depending on settings.

Definitely not the case here even though I was shooting outside. I really think it has to do with IR.

Some colors look a bit muddy.

What would be signs of UV contamination – what would change in the image?

I hate to agree with manufactures but Jan is right – these cameras are freaking awesome as many people will attest to. I have had them in some pretty uncontrolled lighting situations and they perform so well. Would I like something better….yes. Do I need it…no – these cameras, at least the pair I have (plus a 250) do not have the limitations you describe – or at least are not as bad.
