If the payed version of FCPX is anything like the trial version, keep your money in your pocket. It’s a disaster. Especially since the latest OS X update where it keeps verifying its origin, because it is not acquired via the App store. Apple don’t even recognize their own software anymore. When it eventually does start, it doesn’t play the clips in the timeline and/or any clip is misformed. Not worth a penny, let alone €270

August 30, 2014 at 10:33 am in reply to: Stopping FCPX From Copying Files Between Libraries – Possible? At the moment I am transferring all my tape recordings to FCPX into a media library. My intention is to apply keywords and notes to all clips to make it easier to find clips when creating a project. I’d rather not create the projects in the media library. What I read from this thread is that creating external files (rather than an FCPX managed library) is the preferred way to allow aliases to be used in projects. If I would consolidate my media library to create these external files, will the keywords be copied as well or do I lose everything except the clips ? Can I apply keywords to externally managed clips ?

Agree. The same is true for the recognition of individual clips on DV tape. The earlier versions import as single clips of 1 hour, while the later ones import correctly.

I found, that my problem only exists with older tapes, dating back to before 2000. When I imported a more recent tape, the dates were OK.
-
Yes, the date is in the name, but I would like the date and time to appear as date/time fields, just as the creation date. I guess that is not supported.

Hi Robin,
Thanks for your reaction. Assigning keywords is only a minor part of the problem. Most of the time a complete tape is imported as a single clip that gets the date of import, rather than the recording date. I find this rather strange and maybe it’s a bug, but there you go. So I will have to change the dates and names of the “logical clips” in the single physical clip. I would think splitting that clip into sub-clips and changing the dates and names of the sub-clips is the only way to tackle this. Or am I wrong ?

Hi Mark,
Please refer to the attached file 7494_sampleblur.jpg.zip for an example of what I would like to achieve.
Contrary to the Photo Recall effect, the background picture should be window-filling (zoomed). I hope this will clarify my intentions.

Hi Mark,
Yes, the Photo Recall effect is essentially what I want, however, the blurred background has the same aspect ratio as the photo/clip it is applied to. What I want is e.g. a portrait image, centered, and a part of that image used as a fullscreen background. So, the aspect ratio’s of the Effect Source and its “copy” are different. Cloning does not allow me to do that.
Inspecting the Photo Recall effect in Motion is showing me some behaviors I cannot find anywhere, such as LinkY. Do you know what they are, how they work and where I can find info about them ? Google hasn’t helped me here.
Appreciating you help.

Hi Mark,
Maybe you can help me out here: what I would like to do is create an effect that will be applied to a portrait photo and will show that picture as it is and a blurred copy of that picture, fullscreen, in the background. Unfortunately this is not possible using the clone approach, because I cannot have different aspect ratio’s for the effect source and its clone.
Do you have any suggestions how to tackle this in Motion ?

Hi Andy
Thanks for the feedback.
During some additional testing, I shortened the duration to the actual effect duration (so intro>build in>build-out>outtro) and that made no difference. Which is in my view strange, because the part between build-in and build-out should be stretched to the FCPX clip duration. So, in theory, the length of the effect in Motion is irrelevant, as long as you would have at least 1 frame between build-in and build-out. In practice, however, this does not work.
When I increased the duration of the part between build-in/out, though, applying the effect on both longer and shorter clips seems to give the results I want.
Thanks for your help.
