  • Thanks for your responses. I have experienced that issue you speak of with inaccurate color and didn’t know what the cause was. I am actually a student myself (totally student run), and I just want to keep improving the organization. The way money works around here, its easier to get one big expenditure passed through committee than several small things. So I was thinking of getting 4 Decklink Studio 2 cards, since they seem to have the best combination of analog and digital inputs and outputs for our existing equipment. I would like to be able to monitor in apple color, soundtrack, and motion, none of which support FireWire monitoring.

The advantage of RAID’s is that you can use a cheap drive like the Western Digital, and if they fail it’s fine because of redundancy. Drive’s have a limited lifespan and it definitely varies from drive to drive, even within the same model. You can pay for super expensive server grade drives, but I prefer to take solace in the fact that I have a hot spare, and that if a drive fails I’ll be fine and can just buy slip in a new one. I use the Hitachi DeskStar 2TB and have had no failures with them.

I edit footage from a Canon 7D which is 1080p on my Macbook Pro which is exactly like yours, and with a FW800 hard drive. There is no issue, as long as I export the 7D’s H.264 files to Apple ProRes before I start editing. The editing will be fine, but expect your exports, renders, and compressions to take a while.
