I’m not familiar with that particular camera but I think the camera’s menu setting you want may be listed as “iLink Conv” (convert). It should be set to “off”. You may also have to unplug the cable first to get the change to stick.

I can’t recommend an external Blu-ray burner – you’ll have to rely on others to help you there. Other World Computing has some that come bundled with Toast Titanium which is what I use for making Blu-ray discs. Make sure Toast has the Blu-ray plug-in. Then it’s a simple matter of exporting a self-contained movie from Final Cut and bringing that into Toast. There’s not much you can do as far as authoring, but I’ve been satisfied with the results I’m getting. You may also want to buy a re-writable Blu-ray disc to experiment with to avoid making coasters… and of course, you should have a Blu-ray player and HDTV to assess your results.

There’s no reason why it shouldn’t work. Data files are data files, regardless of the medium they’re delivered on… unless you’re coming from a Mac and going to a PC – then you have to be sure your hard drive or flash drive is formatted properly (FAT32) and no one file exceeds 2GB in size. Data files on a disc don’t have this issue.

I’m not going to recommend one over the other, but one thing to keep in mind is the Z1 records in HDV format to tape whereas the NX5 records AVCHD to cards or the optional FMU-128GB flash memory drive. Your editing workflow might be the deciding factor.

The first thing you must realize is that you are not going to get HD onto DVDs – the only disc format for HD is Blu-ray. Without knowing for sure what platform you are using (I suspect it’s Mac because you mentioned iDVD) and what editing software is involved, it’s hard to suggest how to get where you want to go without knowing where you are. Regardless, if you are working with HD and want to deliver DVDs you will eventually need to re-compress for SD. If you want to deliver HD you are looking at Blu-ray.

Yes, it’s there. Although I’ve been using Media 100 since 1996, I’ve actually never used the trim function so I can’t say how it works – I do all my trimming in the timeline.
The two photos show how the edit suite window serves more than one purpose via the function buttons along the top.

I have to say, Media 100 is the most under-rated NLE out there today. My first experience with Media 100 was in 1995 and I’ve been using it exclusively ever since. I’m not alone in thinking it’s definitely the most intuitive and easy to learn system, due in large part to it’s simple interface which has changed very little since v1.0. – but that’s not to say it doesn’t offer much in the way of functionality or features. On the contrary. To borrow directly from the Media 100 website – “Import and export XML from Final Cut Pro v7, native REDCODE support with metadata editing, and support for AJA, Blackmagic Design, and Matrox video I/O hardware” – these are features worthy of any ‘professional’ system currently in use, don’t you think? Admittedly, there was a time when the software almost disappeared, but that was the result of bad business practices by the developer who sold it to a company who decided it wasn’t something they really wanted to continue supporting, and then in turn sold it to Boris FX who have since been developing and supporting it like never before. I could go on, but suffice to say, it all comes down to what tool you’re comfortable using to get the job done – for me it’s been a stable, professional editing tool for the past 16 years in the market I serve and I don’t see myself abandoning it any time soon. With the current FCP-X debacle, anyone looking for a capable replacement tool should seriously look at Media 100 as an alternative to Premiere Pro or Avid.

Hi Alan,
This happens to me a lot too, but it’s because I unintentionally perform the keyboard shortcut – depress the ‘option’ + ‘Apple’ + ‘s’ keys simultaneously and it toggles the side bar in and out. I edit video using the Media 100 software and that keystroke combination is what is used to ‘save all’ so I often find myself automatically doing it when I’m not running the software. It took me a while to figure it out when it first happened to me.
