I just saw an interesting online ad. If you don’t think BMD has noticed that there is a number of people
    who don’t like subscriptions……take a look at this ad…..

I use Verifly to insure any commercial drone flights. It works through an app on your iPhone. You start it when you start your flight. Easy to build the costs into any paid jobs. Plus I’m not paying some monthly insurance fee during months I have no drone work.

Yeah, as mentioned you cannot use a drone for commercial use in any state without the 107. However, it’s not bad to get familiar with flying one for personal use to see if you are even interested in doing it commercially. If you end up getting a 107, bigger productions that need a drone pilot may sometimes hire you on. And they will often have a producer in charge of getting permits to fly in state parks or whatever you need, so it’s not like you have to do all that yourself every time you fly. But yeah, you are correct, it’s a lot of ‘red tape’ to deal with at times. That’s why most people don’t bother with it, because unless you really want to do a lot of it, it’s more of a bother to get certified and deal with all the regulations than it is worth.

If you are in the U.S. you cannot legally ‘make a buck or two’ with it until you get your part 107 license from the FAA……..

I bought a 3DR Solo awhile ago. I then studied for and got my 107 license.
I use the drone in commercial projects. And yes, FCPX does great with the footage. I can edit the 4K easily, on my 2009 Mac Pro.

Yup, I use Affinity Photo for any image editing I need to do. I have even picked up Affinity
Designer for the very few times I need to do that type of work. Great programs and
pretty inexpensive. Of course I’m one of the few people who can’t stand the subscription
thing (which means no Adobe products for me) so you may want to take what I say
with a grain of salt 🙂

I think he is talking about selecting a range within each clip…..and
    doing it for several clips….

For me, it’s kinda over. I’ve made my decision and I won’t be using
Adobe unless they change their subscription only way of
doing business. But it’s working for them and seems to be good
for their business, so that’s not going to happen. Useless to really
complain about. Lots of business relationships go this route, as
what is in the best interests of one, is not in the best interests
of the other. You move on and they move on, and it is what it is.
No big deal, nothing personal, just both parties doing what is
    best for them.

  • [Simon Ubsdell] “I love that my pathetic Dad joke has spawned so many interesting posts about renewables.

While (all joking aside) I’m not sure I’m fully in tune with the “survivalist” anti-subscription brigade, I am very much in favour of renewables.

This industry has always been hideously wasteful of resources.

Throwing away your Mac device every three years (or far more frequently), as Apple want you to do, is a particularly egregious example.”

I think it just goes to show……that much as cameras, computers, and NLE’s have advanced
with leaps and bounds over the last few years……so has technology in other areas.
Can you imagine running a refrigerator and a freezer off solar panels that are
somehow pulling energy from a sky devoid of sunlight? Amazing times I tell you.

Oh yeah….my Mac is from 2009 ☺ . Suck it Apple.

  • [Simon Ubsdell] “It was a RECURRING DEMAND FOR PAYMENT that was threatening to LOCK ME OUT OF MY PROJECTS if I stopped coughing up, which is why I decided to take my entire life off-grid.

(Admittedly I can now only edit when there’s a gale blowing, but it’s worth it.)

You know what’s actually kind of amazing. I live in SE Alaska. Now most people think
of Alaska as this snow and ice covered wasteland. But the southeast portion of Alaska is along
the ‘inside passage’, full of islands and fjords, and is much more similar to Seattle (climatewise)
than what most people think of when they think of Alaska. Normal winters are 30-45 and rainy.
Living on the ocean, keeps it relatively mild here, but it’s wet!! The Tongass National Forest, which
covers most of SE Alaska, is the largest national forest in the US at 17 million acres…..and it’s
a temperate rainforest. This collision of relatively warm marine air, and coastal mountains
means up to 225 inches of rainfall a year. Needless to say, sunny days are rare and much appreciated.
Yet, somehow, in the middle of this rainforest, my parents manage to live ‘off the grid’ and what
do you imagine they use for their power? Northern climate solar panels. Crazy.
