April 14, 2012 at 10:16 pm in reply to: Apple not the only NLE with an X

To their credit, it’s been called Video Pro X for years, long before Apple came around with X. Never tried it, although it is not that uncommon in certain segments in Germany.

  • I would take such assessement in the article with a grain of salt. Makes for a good catchline but that’s pretty much it. They see Apple NLE, its history and pricing, and they see Avid NLE and then they draw conclusions.
Apart from the iPad App there is no consumer video product from Avid for the Mac so what are they really talking about? I doubt lots of “creative enthusiasts” were all that interested in MC to start with, cross-grade pricing or not. It’s not their market on the Mac, never has been. As far as their PC products are concerned FCPX has no impact.

[Andrew Richards] “He uses good ol’ Gig-E, and noted in his post that the 2011 iMacs once again have jumbo frame support for best results with his Small Tree system.

But as an aside, ATTO has a pair of 10Gb-E Thunderbolt boxes coming soon.”

He must connect via 10GIG too, see his blog post and mentioning of a 10Gig Ethernet switch.
Quote: “And it’s not just that we have some faster products now with the new 48TB RAID and the 10GigE switch from Small Tree.”

[Andrew Richards] “But as an aside, ATTO has a pair of 10Gb-E Thunderbolt boxes coming soon.”

Yes, but no pricing for that one is available

[Andrew Richards] “[Frank Gothmann] “Decklink SDI 280,-”

He’s doing HD work, and has a collection of Kona 3 cards already.”

Decklink SDI does HD. I assume the Konas he has are in use, which is why he mentioned buying ioXTs if new iMacs come in.

[Andrew Richards] “I’m not saying the iMac is a bad choice or wouldn’t be great for the work he has planned for it, just that not comparing the iMac to its market peers is an incomplete analysis of his options for outfitting his shop. Heck, I’d buy the iMacs too, but I’m an admitted OS X partisan and I’ll go out of my way to avoid Windows if I can manage it.”

Yes, as I have said: if the OS is relevant the iMac is probably the best and only choice. Certainly not a Mac Mini.

[Andrew Richards] “If it is just about cost, there are equally capable mid-range PC towers that would allow you to use your existing displays, your existing I/O cards, and your existing shop cabling. Why not consider a lesser PC tower if OS X is not driving the decision (because your NLEs are cross platform)?”

If the OS is a consideration and since he intends to use MC or other non-Cuda soft then the iMac is a viable option. If the OS is not relevant other options may make more sense from a cost/performance point of view plus potential upgradability to Cuda if necessary in the future:

    iMac: 1.999,-
10 Gig Ethernet Nic for Mac: 1.000,- (assuming he is using 10GIG to connect to his San, I think he does).
    Magma Thunderbolt Chasis: 1.000,-
    Aja ioXT: 1.495,-
    = 5.495,-

    HP z210 (Avid Certified): 1.600,-
Intel 10 Gig Ethernet Nic: 600,-
    Decklink SDI 280,-
    = 2.380,-

True, also his calculation is based on speching out the machines directly at at the source. I’d never buy ram, hard drives etc. at Apple, HP etc. They all charge a premium for these thing. It’s much cheaper to get all you add-ons, ram etc. separate.

Did some snooping around and found this.
Looks like a big winner, CS6 can do it

You will inititally end up with two files. Video and audio plus one audo (me). Then you take the audio file and add it to the video/audio file (edit, add to movie file. Make sure you QT player cursor is at the beginning of the file. Also, both files should be the same length. You can see the start and end time with TC values in the movie properties after pasting). Save as new and you have your delivery with four channel audio.
It’s not nice, I know, as I have said, I hope very much that this has changed with CS6.

CS 5.5 can’t do that in it’s current state. You can only output Mono, Stereo or 5.1 to files. Unless you can deliver your audio and video seperate this is a big limitation of CS5.5 that made it useless for me on many jobs. I seriously hope that this has changed with CS6. It was one of the biggest issues I had with CS5.5.
Of course, you could export video and stereo track, then the me as audio only and then splice the m&e track to the file in QT player and save as new.

[Tony Brittan] “Wonder how much the upgrade from 5.5 to 6 will cost me now? Hope it’s reasonable. Anyone heard anything?”

I should be the price for the usual 1-generation jump: around 399.

  • “Danni Lowinski”???? Are you serious. Me being German, it’s pretty hilarious to see someone use that show as promotion for their stuff. I know most people here won’t get the joke but let’s just say it’s somewhat underachieving compared with Cohen Brothers in previous add campaigns.
What’s next? Resolve used for a re-release of Married with Children?
