  • Hey Walter… hi —

I’m sorry I took so long to respond. Like I said in the other forums — it just worked out that way. I read your response the day after you wrote it. Like I said to a some of the other guys — your response was one of those that completely spoke to me.

Don’t be offended please by the fact that I posted in so many rooms. I actually probably did feel a bit of unethical before you even mentioned the rule, but I have to say, I was able to put A REALLY CLEAR picture together thanks to the time a lot of the guys spent. You spent from among the longest. You really broke it down to me and you didn’t have to. I noticed that as soon as I started reading. You really helped me out. I’m very happy to know uncompressed now. I’m also motivated to learn more. Thanks a lot. Don’t mind if I come back with further questions. I have some already, and I’ve had them from a couple of days now. I do wanna formulate them better though. Anyway, thanks a lot Walter (so much man, you have no idea). Best, Val

  • John, hi — sorry for the delayed response. Things just turned out this way, but I did get a chance to read your response almost immediately.

I gotta say, I posted this question in many forums here on the cow, and a lot of folks surprisingly took the time like you took the time. I felt so much appreciation. Anyways, you guys really painted a clear picture for me. I actually understand uncompressed. I also gotta say, John, there are a couple of points that you made here that seem to contradict what I now understand about uncompressed, but I can say with confidence that this is due to the way I phrased some of my questions. I can tell this based on your answers to them. Anyway, I understand uncompressed, and was also able to pick up a few extra gems from everyone’s input. Thanks a lot, John. You actually once helped me in a Vegas vs FCP question I posted. If you remember, it is probably still one of the longest posts in cow history. Thanks man. I do have more questions, but wanna formulate them better first. Thanks for offering. Cheers

    Val

  • Guys, very sorry for the delayed response. Things just turned out this way. Margus, my master goal was to figure out what uncompressed means. I gotta say though, a lot of folks pitched in, and I now understand. Thanks for your efforts guys. Aside from understanding uncompressed, I picked up a lot of side-gems, so thanks for your efforts.

  • Andy, thanks again. And Michael, thanks for your effort. Sorry guys both for the delayed response. It’s just how things turned out. And Michael, I know what you mean by finding one pro — but I was confused even by the pros. But I’m good now. A lot of folks pitched in here on the cow and I now, very fortunately, have a very clear picture.

  • Andrew, please forgive the late response. It’s just how things turned out. But I read your response almost immediately. I actually posted this question in about a dozen cow forums, and many folks took the time to help (!!). And aside from picking up a few side-gems from everyone who responded, I actually was able to get a really clear picture because of everyone’s input. Yours spoke to me. Your saying “You cannot watch compressed video” was like an Aha! moment for me. Thanks a lot. I really actually understand now. Cheers Andrew. Thanks.

    Very best,
    Val

  • David, please very seriously consider forgiving the very delayed response. It’s just how things turned out, although I did read your response the day after you wrote it. And I finally understand! Instantly upon seeing the care you took with your response, I felt an appreciation for the many minutes you spend to help me. You were a big help to me before as well, in a Vegas vs. FCP question I asked a year or two or so back.

David, I actually understand. I won’t lie — I posted this question in about a dozen cow forums, and many folks took the time to help (!!), and so aside from understanding, I picked up a few gems from everyone who responded. I’m very thankful, and I am “uncompressed.” Man, I really have been going in circles for about three weeks!! Thank you a lot, David.

    Very best,
    Val

I think I get it: the capture card captures the camera’s playback, and the playback is the uncompressed/decoded version. SDI passes in real-time. Now here’s a question — if the camera is playing back in real-time, and there’s an hour of footage, how is it that I’ve seen videos on Youtube where over thunderbolt, data was transferred in a flash almost. How can thunderbolt transfer faster than the capture card is capturing, considering that it is capturing in real-time — meaning 1 hour (since it takes one hour to play back an hour of footage in real-time)? Thanks.

hey guys, what does it mean that “Thunderbolt can run for 100 metres over optical fibre without a repeater.” — something I found online. does this mean that we dont have to go with the 6′ thunderbolt cable?

to Jeremy: but it’s only real-time if I have the camera connected to the AJA as I’m shooting, such as in a broadcast environment — no?

to Gary: what I mean is — if I’m using the AJA to transfer footage stored on a camera card onto a computer, I’ll have the camera hooked up to the AJA via SDI, and the AJA to the Mac via Thunderbolt. Once the footage reaches the AJA, it will move on to the Mac at 10Gbps. But at what rate (and this question reveals that I’m a novice) will the footage “reach” the AJA from the camera card through SDI?

to Jeremy: I’ve been speaking to the AJA guys and they mention the KiPro too….. at the moment I’m not using a camera w/ SDI but researching.

    Guys thanks a lot.

are you saying that i’ll be transferring the signal of the playback of the recorded file?
