Huh, very interesting! Do you also have OS X on this computer, installed on a separate drive? Seems like a silly question but I do know of some people here who’ve bought a Mac Pro just to run Windows.

I’m not sure what you mean. I’m not running Windows inside of OS X. I boot holding down the option key and choose the Windows installation that’s on a separate drive. How did you get XP on your Mac Pro in the first place?

I don’t care if the Kona or ATTO cards don’t work in Windows: I just don’t want them to stop Windows from booting. Right now, I can’t even boot into Windows because the ATTO card stops it from working. What’s odd is that it sounds like it’s working for you. What ATTO card do you have? I am running Windows on an entirely separate drive on my Mac Pro.

Well, I got my answer from ATTO. They know about the problem and simply said “Nobody supports Boot Camp yet. We’ll starting supporting it when OS X 10.5 comes out”. Wow, those guys are idiots! Time to start looking for an alternative to ATTO, I suppose.

Personally, I wouldn’t do this. Apple has a tendency to mess with people who’ve got odd hardware configurations (e.g., an OS update is released which breaks your system). Also, with five hard drives in the computer, it’s definitely going to be warm inside. Not enough to cause any harm, I’m sure, but warm enough to make your computer louder (thanks to the fan – particularly the one on the video card – spinning faster).
I would buy an external SATA enclosure. After reading many reviews (the ones on AMUG’s site are great) and seeing the product in person at NAB, I got one of these:

I paired it with one of these:

The combination has been great. I get about 250 MB/second read and write. The enclosure is very quiet – about the same as my old G5 – and it works well with the new Mac Pro. There’s no redundancy, of course, which is why a “real” array from someone like Huge is appealing but it’s cheap, quiet and fast.

Yes, is the short answer. The correct configuration – as per AJA – is being used.
What Mac are you using with the 4210?

It made no difference. Wow, this is frustrating!

What’s really weird is that just for a test, I put the ATTO card back in, the one that’s supposed to not work well until ATTO releases a new driver and it seems to be working fine! I’m getting the speed I’d expect – 230 MB/s – and I haven’t had a crash yet. Oh, actually: that’s not true. I did get a freeze in FCP when I tried to do a render.
It’s all really weird and, basically, I think the combination of Mac Pro, more than 2 GB RAM and fibre channel is not reliable. I haven’t heard from anyone having no problems.

I have 16 GB of RAM.

I made a mistake in my testing: I actually get good RAID performance as long as the Kona isn’t in the system and the FC card is in *either* slot 3 or slot 4 – which makes more sense than what I originally said.
I’ve called AJA and they are going to do some testing, plus send me a new card.
So, my question is does anyone have the a similar setup – Mac Pro, Kona & Apple FC card – and *not* see this problem? It’d be useful to know if someone with the same config has no problems.
