I’ve yet to test or see a review of these units, but Lacie has some very interesting thunderbolt drives in the making:

Is 25 Hz footage required to be the same speed / length at 30 Hz? If not, in AE, choose “Interperate footage” and change the footage frame rate there. 25 to 30 fps is however a noticeable speed increase (20%). If you also require sound to match your best bet I having it pitch-corrected-converted via Protools or similar.

If you require the footage to be the same length there really isn’t any magic souce software out there sadly. A Terranex box might give you better results but that’s 2000 USD.

Another “what if” is Apple using iCloud’s coming server-side solution for shared libraries… That said, that would require some serious re-thinking of how Apple ID’s are setup for groups.

It’s against the ELUA but primarily we’d need to log in with a companies Apple ID, expose a joint credit card etc. It’s a very in-elegant way of dealing with things. It would mean me dealing with a third Apple ID, two as it is today is messy enough.

Apple has a volume-program in certain regions. Not yet Sweden. The whole Apple ID-solution is at the moment broken for groups. Seeing they are adding features like “family connections” in iOS 8 they are looking into “group tech” but at the moment – at least in Sweden – the AppStore model is a huge issue for businesses buying apps.

    One should be able to:

    A) Link multiple accounts into groups
    B) Merge multiple accounts into one
    C) Transfer purchases between account
    D) Redeem items between accounts
    E) Give temporary access to items between accounts / based on account groups

For a single man show it’s not a problem with the Apple ID / AppStore model of today. For us just being two people needing an NLE I immediately run into the above issues that I just do not understand why Apple hasn’t fixed yet.

The above a side I’m going to have to put FCPX and PrPro CC 2014 more to the test now that we’ve got a nMP to see what our future platform will be.

    This should work.

I’d strong advice against using Compressor for DPX > ProRes conversion. From all my tests Compressor is stil the worst conversion software one can use.

DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Media Encoder or Adobe After Effects should handle DPX to ProRes correctly. You should also with out to much overhead in FCPX be able to use full 2K (2048×1536) files in your 1080p timeline and do a digital pan / scan / zoom as required. I’d however advice having the same frame rate if possible.

Depending on the final output, ProRes 422HQ should be good enough.

That’s sadly an extremely inefficient way of dealing with things and requires using mouse over on a specific item.

The lack of proper timecode readers in FCPX is one of the main issues I have with the app. It’s really hard or impossible to see timecode on clips in a project / sequence vs clips in the browser. Have I completely missed something or is this just the way FCPX is? I didn’t realize how important these things where before not having them.

That’s true, then again, Time Machine isn’t know for it’s “rock solid” performance… 🙂

But they do add a layer of “single point of failure”?

Of course one has backups of critical data. Just thinking things like a power-failure should cause a file to get corrupt. One file in a project normally isn’t a problem unless it’s the project-file or in this case… The whole media-asset bundle. But perhaps it’s so uncommon it’s not something one has to fear really?
