To add to this, it seems like Compressor 4 is somewhat a “bastard child” that lives on. It’s not been re-skinned with the factor of “X” so to speak. A bit odd I’d say but I guess they had to get these apps out of walls of Cupertino…

I’ll reply my self here as the question I have is “how is Apple thinking regarding this?”. I mean.. do they want to scare off the current high-end pros using FCP? If they plan on supporting us they should give us a hint of what the future really will bring for FCPX.

I think the idéa of having editing / grading / sound-suiting as they have done it is the way to go for sure. But we can’t live with out video i/o and an app that can communicate with other post applications.

    – FCP X is NOT for Professionals
    – No Log and Capture, No 3rdParty Plugins, codecs or Hardware today.
    – No EDL or XML support -in or out at this time.

Wow… That some massive lack of pro features…

More so, what’s the status on video-output via cards like the Kona 3? Very few details regarding that…

I get a weird warping of the footage that looks of dodgy quality.

What was the footage shot on? If it suffers from rolling shutter you often need a better stabilizing solution the Smooth Cam sadly.

June 16, 2011 at 5:38 pm in reply to: 240fps Render After Effects CS5

Note that the output frame rate from a game can differ from the the refresh-rate of your screen. This will in general cause screen-tearing. But it’s not uncommon you have games running at say 50 fps in-game and menus roaring by at 200 fps cause cause they are easier for the GPU to render.

If you have a powerful enough system you will enable double / tripple buffer. This will sync the frame-rate with your output device (at the cost of some performance).

All in all editing game-footage can be a pain because of this.

June 16, 2011 at 5:34 pm in reply to: 240fps Render After Effects CS5

Sometimes I hate these ancient forums, do a replay > get need to log in and loose all my text. Thanks mr Cow!

Anyhow, to try and recap what I wrote. Video games on Mac/PC don’t always follow set standards in terms of frame-rate or frame size. Often the optimal settings for best performance simply output as many frame per second as possible at a given resolution – i.e. this can be anything from 0 fps to over 200 fps and it can variate a lot.

So, say you do have a frap-recording at 240fps the best thing you can do is the following.

    1. Note that After Effects is limited to 99 fps comps and probably footage as well. Because of this you can’t edit in “native” 240 fps.
    2. To overcome the above limitation I’d recommend converting your fraps footage to an image sequence. I.e. every single frame in the fraps-file should be a seperate image.
    3. Import the image sequence and state it should be run at 30 fps.
    4. Your recording should now run at 1/8th of realtime. For realtime you need to increase the speed by 800% or 8 frames per frame.

    Makes sense?

Sadly I’m not sure how you would do #2.

I personally record game-footage on the Mac and editing can be an issues as you end up with variable frame-rate an a non-standard resolution. My solution is to limit in-game frame-rate to 50 and then converting the video-file to 25 fps after it’s been recorded. This doesn’t allow me any nifty things like slow-motion or anything however.

June 11, 2011 at 1:23 pm in reply to: Premiere Pro CS 5.5 versus Final Cut Pro

I would give this though a say “pause” until Apple has fully revealed it’s intentions with Final Cut Pro X and te rest of their suite. A few direct “ups” of going to MacOS X and Final Cut Pro is one unified format (QuickTime / ProRes) and the avaliablelity of two relatively cheap color correction tools – Apple Color and DaVinci Resolve.

That said, I’d have a hard time seeing me NOT using Adobes production bundle – I just don’t use Premier in it. After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator are more or less a must for my self.

The above is also a question of preferred platform. I know I’ll work faster and be more happy in a OSX environment, I also know people who prefer sitting in Linux or Windows. Everyones tastes are different. In the end though it wouldn’t kill you to have multiple platforms in-house, given it can cause some headaches it can also add jobb-opportunities and keep your workers happier. Alot of post-facilities are mixed platform.

June 2, 2011 at 5:50 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro X – Release date??

The only thing that would really warrant a release of FCPX in time for WWDC is so they can use this application as an example of how to do things in OSX. Sounds far fetched though.

What we MIGHT see are updates to Mac and / or iPhone. Again what would warrant Mac-updates is tech-talk about for example Thunderbolt across the line. Again, I have my doubts here… iPhone-updates are perhaps more likely as it’s more of a closed platform than MacOSX and developers would be quite interested in the developments here.

FCPX I highly doubt we’ll see. It wouldn’t surprise me if we see a release late June, if they in fact hold their deadlines.

May 31, 2011 at 10:50 am in reply to: tracking data to clone stroke

I’ve done a similar job but resorted to Mocha and tracking a 2D plane into the actors face. Worked like a charm.

I would love to see a more solid tracker / tracker feature-set in AE though. Feels very outdated. They should also add distortion(s) to a layers properties. At least corner pin data.
