I’d also say if you do any kind of complex work, Motion will bog down. AE might be “slow” from the start but it won’t completely choke when you put it to the test (from my experience). But the two above responses are good to. Also Motion has a default of rendering “fast” rather than “good”, change all settings to “best” (default in AE) and you will see if be slower. But yes, somethings are amazing in Motion compared to AE, that’s for sure.

Yeah, I know and I stand by the fact I need video output, I need the Kona codec and I’d rather have larger files than longer rendertimes even if ProRes 4444 is overkill 🙂

It’s the “rainbow color effect” bug I’m referig to. Gamma-shifts seem not a probelm with ProRes 4444 at least in CS5. Yes, removing the codec would love my problem, trouble is we’ve had projects using AJA 10-bit RGB codec amongst other things.

Thanks for the reply! Normally I\’d go with ProRes 422 HQ but the issue is the After Effects has a very nasty bug when working with this codec in conjunction with a Kona 3 card on OSX. The solution here is ProRes 4444 or render in 16-bit in AE. Here I prefer larger files over longer rendertimes through the entire post. But I get what you say.
Does the Canon Log and Transfer re-wrap 50p media to 25p? Does any other tool do this? Did some quick tests last night and AE seems to do it fine but that\’s a bit \”brute force\”.

I can add to the above the set will be very controlled and we don’t (I don’t think at least) have a lot of motion to suffer from the dreaded shutter distortion. We’re shooting bubbles as far as I gathered (whine / soft-drink “sizzles”).

No, I was referring to the new single 6-core MacPro 2010. This runs at higher clock-speed than any other system to date and still has 6-cores, given it might be a little limited in the RAM-area (not sure if RAM-through-put is a problem with a system like Resolve).
Also most tests show an “old” 2008 8-core 2.8Ghz or faster system to perform very similar to modern system (with lower clock-speeds of course).

Really nice to see MacPro 2008 certification. What’s the main drawback of using these vs a 2010-model? Pure rendering-speeds they seem to keep up quite well give or take a few %. Also, would the single CPU 6-core 2010 machine work? For most applications it’s the fastest machine around, but perhaps DaVinci prefers a slower 8/12 core machine?

I can second this question. At the moment we’re simply cloning our firewire-drives from set which gives us a back-up but it’s quite messy, unreliable and fully un-automated.
Something like a Cache-a would solve our problem but then we’re talking quite a hefty starting cost.

Before I get drilled here I have asked our reseller the same question how didn’t recommend it as support from AVID (since they bought Medea) is less than sub-par from his experience. Still for me it would be interesting as the kabinett with a FC-card performs quite well (330MB/s or so now with RAID-5 in a 2TB volume). So if anyone has any experince or might just back-up my reseler, do tell 🙂
