So, just what would you suggest? Simply strip out anything found inside of a pair of angle brackets, or something a bit more complex? As far as the differences with the angle bracket character’s display in e-mails, that’s probably due to another HTML savvy person making a post.

What browsers are you using when you get this error? Also, what sorts of firewalls, proxy servers, or other intermediary systems stand between your computers, and the internet at large?

We haven’t seen this sort of behavior around headquarters with any of our PCs or Macs.

Okay, many thanks for the in-depth reporting here This is what I call useful information! Now then, the answers…

First off, yes, the change of the look is due to the fact that we’re running under the new system now – and the way it appears on your screen is indeed the way that it should be showing. The display was designed to be quite simple. Pictures only show up if the profile gives us one. And the reason for it not being in a popup window is indeed because we’re trying to avoid issues with popup windows.

As far as the multiple different user ids for the same person… Some people have had multiple different accounts on the system – and there have been some errors in the past that have caused some of our long-term members to have their accounts duplicated – hence, the different profiles for the same person. Problem is, we’re too small a team to be able to have somebody dedicated just to finding and fixing all of these errors in the historical portions of the database. All we can do is try to limit their occurance in new posts.

Finally, the error message that you’re getting. I don’t have a clue where THAT’s coming from. I’ve tried looking at the exact pages you’ve given me the links for, and my copy of IE6 doesn’t show the error message. Further, opening up the page source that the mechanism produces, there isn’t even an “elements” tag in the source. And the line number and character position it refers to is right in the middle of the text of a javascript write command – a block of straight text that it shouldn’t even be trying to interpret. If you could perhaps save a copy of the source of that page and e-mail it to me, I can take a look at the code that you’re receiving, and compare it to what the mechanism is producing. My personal suspicion is that the code is getting mangled somewhere between the server and your browser. That, or it’s a difference in the settings of IE on your machine versus the settings on my machine. And if that’s the case… MINE’S BETTER!!!! 😛 PPPHHPPTTT!!!

(We apologize for the excessive outbreak of nerd’s ego at the end of the last paragraph… Nah, on second thought, we don’t. 🙂

Okay, I’ve just tried a few profile links, on Firefox, IE, and a Linux box for good measure. I’m not seeing this error you’re describing on any of them, in either active posts or archives. Could you give me the link to the page you were on when you got it?

Thanks for the feedback Jared. The first priority with the search engine was including the archive posts in the new system. Now that that’s done, we’ll be taking a look at re-instituting the option to have your results open in a new window. Expect to see it sometime in the near future.
