[Yair Bartal] “Suppose I have one 3 minutes clip for angle 1 and two 1 minute clips for angle 2 and “Use audio for synchronization” doesn’t work.”

Prior to creating Multicam clips, your very first step (after ingest/import) is to tell FCPX which clips belong to each camera angle…

Step 1: Select all the source clips for Camera A in the browser.

Step 2: Open the ‘Info’ tab in the inspector and change the metadata view to either General or Extended… fill in the ‘Camera Angle’ field (CamA).

Step 3: Select all of your Camera B clips in the browser, and set the Camera Angle field to CamB.

If you have sync audio (from another stand-alone audio recorder), do the same for those clips.

Step 4: Create new Multicam clips. Presto!

Setting the angles beforehand lets FCPX know that all of those related clips belong on the same ‘track’, and will probably fix your problem with audio sync.

    Hey Tom,

Just curious – how are you applying the LUT?

[Tom Sefton] “Tim’s plugins are long since gone Bill. Website returns a dead URL. “

FYI – they’re still available via FxFactory when you enable ‘Show discontinued products’ in prefs.

I was thinking along the lines of the Promise solution, but with the option to use multiple NVMe sticks in an MXP module.

[greg janza] “There’s a certain amount of irony that I’m working on a new imac pro at my current gig but using a Das keyboard and Logitech mouse due to the fact that both the mac keyboard and mouse are ergonomic disasters.”

I don’t mind the mice, but it would not be hyperbole to say that I hate the new keyboards and trackpads.

June 1, 2019 at 6:33 pm in reply to: Sync footage with no audio to audio track

To elaborate just a bit on Joe’s explanation:
Prior to creating the Multicam clip, you’ll want to set the camera angle for each of the clips.

In the Browser, select all of your Camera 1 clips.
Go to the Inspector’s ‘Info’ tab, and give those clips a label in the Camera Angle field, like ‘Cam 1’ (you can tag all of them at once).
Repeat for each of the camera angles and your sync audio.

This way, all of them will fall into their own lane when creating the Multicam clip.

May 13, 2019 at 3:55 pm in reply to: Layered clips become merged with asterisks?

Sorry to resurrect this older thread, but I’ve just run into this bug myself. The problem manifests itself if any of the layers in the .psd are contained in a secondary storyline. The file loses its ‘media type’ icon and acts like a flat file, and can manifest in the browser or any instances in the timeline. Timeline instances do not ripple back to the original in the browser. I happened to be adding a fade to a layer in the browser when it borked.

    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Import layered file
    2. Double-click to edit
    3. Add a transition to any layer
    4. Exit to another timeline

Even if you delete the transition, the bug manifests. Removing the layer from it’s secondary storyline prior to closing retains edibility. Applying effects, trimming individual layers, turning layers on / off do not cause the bug. Strictly a secondary storyline within the .psd to re-create.

UPDATE: The file can be restored to expected behavior by highlighting the problematic .psd, selecting ‘Open Clip’ from the Clip menu, and removing the secondary storyline. I missed it since double-clicking wouldn’t re-open the file, and I hadn’t set a shortcut for the ‘Open Clip’ command.

  • [Eleanor church] “In answer to your questions:

    1. Did you re-wrap or transcode the footage prior to ingest?

I don’t actually ingest it so I don’t know. I think they just used the C300 plug-in for FCPX.”

Just to be clear, we’re talking about XDCAM with 4 audio channels, correct? I’ve got some C300 cards that have stereo audio, and none with 4 channels.

[Eleanor church] “2. Does everything look as it should inside FCPX, including number/config of audio channels?

    Yes, it does.

    3. Where are the files that you tried to import directly into PPr?

I tried importing the files saved in the FCPX “Original media” folder. That only showed as audio in PPr. I then exported them as Master Files and saved them in a different folder and here the video showed up but the audio didn’t (I guess this is where I need to re-export them but do something to ensure the separate audio channels are conserved? Not sure of best way to do this).”

If I’m not mistaken, PPr will write data to your source media after ingest, which could cause relinking issues in FCPX. I’m not 100% certain of this, but do recall others having problems related to non-matching file sizes / modification dates with their camera originals.

[Eleanor church] “4. What versions for OS / FCPX?

    High Sierra – 10.13.6
    FCPX 10.4.6

    5. Do you have VideoSpec or something similar? It’s a small app that analyses media files and shows detailed information about tracks, encoding, container, bitrates, etc.

    No, I don’t….”

Check one of your source files with this, and maybe post a screen shot of the details. Could be a codec issue, or something to do with the way the files were transcoded:

  • If you’re willing to post a sample file, I’d be happy to run it through the app to test efficacy.

JES Deinterlacer is a freeware app, and I have the last version complete with all documentation. Does anyone know if there is reason not to post it here? I am confident it will handle this task with ease. Of course, it will cease to function when QT7 does, probably with macOS 10.15
