Right. I don’t understand what happens with the 12 cores and 2 threads. Is the theory that since the processing is distributed over so many cores, there is less usage of each? Or, is your opinion that, ALL cores/threads should be used to the max, and processing should therefore occur much more quickly? I guess what I need to do is try the output I described to you using Handbrake, and see if the times differ? The 87 PR422 to h.264 I described takes about 46 minutes.

Have an 87 minute timeline, ProRes 422 HQ, 24fps 1080, a single file (no cuts, no titles, no corrections). Send to Compressor, output h.264, resize to 960 x 540, 6835 kbps … on a 2013 MacBook Pro 13″ Retina w/16GB RAM and 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7. My Apple Activity Monitor graphic bars always max out.

Making of videos show extensive use gimbals and support. Interested to know, other than set design (e.g. subject-to-background distance) and lighting, how shallow depth achieved throughout.

I have the luxury of owning an older 2011 iMac running Snow Leopard, and the final iteration of FCStudio, 7.0.3 which is very stable. It is ideal for opening old FCP7 projects and rendering out QuickTime files with effects or titles that don’t quite port over to FCPX. Also, it has an onboard SuperDrive, so I do my DVD Studio Pro and disk burning. I hope it runs for a good long while!

Awhile back, I authored a DVD with DVDSP under Yosemite. I got all the way thru the process, but then the app failed while compiling … so I moved everything over to my iMac running Snow Leopard, FCStudio 7.0.3 etc where everything still works.
So that is my plan: do DVDSP projects on the legacy hardware.

Sorry Steve. I wish I could be more fun. I DO like FCPX; the debate is over for me. I use it for mostly short pieces I make for fundraising, and web videos. But I have worked on a couple longer projects and still prefer it. As I noted, my son uses Premiere Pro (because he “has to” in order to stay current with New York filmmakers he’s working with) … and so I get to sit in and work with him on occasion. And each time, I find myself wishing I were doing such & so in FCPX.
I guess what I like most on the forum is when Bill or Oliver or Tony posts some new insight, a problem fix or a neat way of using X — or a piece on someone out there who is using X for a cool project. Those are the posts that I am most interested in, they keep me going. As for the debate, it is over for me.

Like your mention of Tracy Kidder’s book. Agreed.
As for the speculation, was Randy having trouble organizing his vacation videos? … LOL, that one I will vote YES, since I have harped forever on the porting-over of iPhoto/iMovie convention, using the term “Events” — presumably because it is more family/amateur friendly — rather than the boring “Clips” or “Media.”
