Sorry, to clarify, a good chunk of the out of sync footage was captured to the internals. So if it’s a speed issue, it’s an issue with the internals as well.

I’ve been using the internal drives, 7200 rpm. We’ve filled up the internal bays, so we just added an eSata drive yesterday and I did some capturing to that as well. This is the first time I’ve used this set up (joys of freelance) and first time we’ve captured HD-SDI on it. (Although, we’re recompressing to DVCPRO 720p60, 25fps on the disk. It’s only HD-SDI from the deck to the BlackMagic card.)

But, yeah, this is the first time all of these elements have been combined in one system, it’s been a headache, and I have every reason to believe I’ve missed a tweak or optimal configuration along the way.

well, I have it set to abort capture on dropped frames … so that shouldn’t be the problem. Also, the sync problem seems (at least with a quick investigation) to be uniform across the clip, not accruing as the clip goes on. I suppose if all the frames are dropped at the start, though, that could be the problem?

  • I didn’t know about this, thanks for the heads up. I’m only starting to deal with the P2 side of things so I don’t know if much footage is actually shot at 50fps (vs. being compressed at DVCPRO 720p50 at 25fps, which it appears is the standard for most of it), but this will be good to know.

I guess I scared everyone away with the large subject line or otherwise violated netiquette … whoops.

  • Not sure I can fully help and might be talking above my knowledge level but a couple things:

    – I’m 98% sure HDV is just a format that lives on miniDV tapes – i.e., whether a tape is standard DV, DVCAM, or HDV has nothing to do with the kind of tape.

    – You don’t say what camera you’re trying to use. If it’s an HVX200, I’m 99.9% sure that it doesn’t play HDV-formatted tapes. You’ll need a deck that plays HDV-formatted tapes. (On the other hand, if you’ve got an HVX200 and the tape is playing in it, then you know it’s a regular DV format tape and you can adjust accordingly.)

    – What is the final output for the project? You’re right that your life will probably be easier if you work at the same format, although FCP 6.0 does support multiple resolutions on the same timeline. Anyway, whatever workflow means you’re transcoding the format the fewest times is the best (imo), and the final output will drive that.

As I’m exporting web movies as we speak …

I was under the impression that support for the H.264 codec was limited (this being from earlier experiences sending somebody a file encoded with H.264 … thinking back, I can’t remember if it was a .mov or MPEG-4, though). Is this not really the case anymore? Because from my experience it certainly is the best looking codec …
