Some suggestions:

1 – make sure you’re on the latest Premiere Pro (8.2)
2 – turn off GPU temporarily and see if that helps
3 – clear/clean your media cache (preferences)
4 – trash your preferences – trash preferences
5 – try a project on local storage – does the crashing stop? If yes, then look at your terrablock or network throughput.
6 – start over – clean reinstall
7 – Contact Adobe support via online forums/help and they will ask you for crash logs which will help zero in on your specific problem

To speak to the codec, certainly ProRes will give you more quality (bits), technically than H.264.

If you’re looking to do film effects, have you ever considered building a grade in Speedgrade and then applying as a batch in Adobe Media Encoder? Doing the rendering in AE wouldn’t be your most efficient method of rendering.

Also, have you checked out the new Lumetri Color Effect in the forthcoming Premiere Pro release?

Couple of things to try

Make sure you have a current or semi-current NVIDIA driver and not the WHQL driver of Windows 10. Clear your media cache (preferences) and trash your preferences (hold down shift+ctrl [I think] while starting the application). If that doesn’t work, then try turning off the GPU and see if the issue goes away. Or try OpenCL instead of CUDA.

Finally, do remember that you’re using a preview build of Win 10 – not an officially supported OS, so your mileage may vary…

I have the same laptop and you can’t upgrade RAM above 16GB – too bad!

I would launch FX Factory and look for an update. They update their applications often. Restart and see how it goes.

If you’re still having issues, then I’d take the plug-in out and see if the crashing stops. If it does, report it to FX Factory and work with them to get a possible bug addressed. They’re pretty reactive when you can get something reproduced.

1 – could be a bug. switch to color correction view, switch to correct sequence, save project, close Premiere Pro, reopen. Is it still displaying the wrong sequence? If so, file a bug.
2 – clear your cache and trash your prefs. see if the problem is still there.

Hi there,

It would probably be helpful to provide more information abotu your system and the conditions under which it is crashing.

In the absence of any other info, I would suggest three basic things.

1) make sure whatever version of Premiere Pro you are using is updated to the latest.
2) Add more RAM (especially if you’re less than 16GB)
3) Make sure you are using current/compatible versions of your plugins with the Premiere Pro client. If your plugin versions are a couple of years old, they are probably not compatible.

First, absolutely get an external drive or raid array that will provide better disk throughput. You’re putting the OS, Premiere Pro and media all through the single hard drive – that’s a recipe for problems.

Remember with a 64-bit application that you’re only as fast as the slowest component. In your case, this is definitely going to be the hard drive system.

H.264 vs. ProRes: More complicated question and the simplest answer is after you have purchased a quality storage subsystem, to experiment between H.264 and ProRes for performance.

H.264 is temporally complex and requires significantly more CPU to decode. Multiply that times 6 and you have your potential performance problem.

ProRes is large data wise. It will gobble up significantly more hard drive space but will likely be better in a 6-camera multicam edit.
