I own a 17-inch i7 (mid-2010) MBP.
You need to check the Core Audio and VO Tool settings as mentioned earlier.
I do sports commentary using my laptop for a nationally broadcast motor-sports show in full HD.
It works well for me, here is my setup:
2TB ESATA external HDD, with Express Card/34 card (Firewire 800 would still cut it though I think).
For pro VO – I use Apogee duet, with an optional small mixer – because of VO Tool limitations (see below).I also have a headphone mixer as well because there are two people laying down VO on the projects.
I also have full headset-mics.
I have been testing SoundTrack Pro and FCP X for future processes.
Why? Because frankly the VO Tool is handy but not very ‘pro’. It will only support one channel of input, yet these other options support multi-inputs.
That will also mean I can liberate the small mixer OUT of setup, which suits me just fine because the Apogee Duet Mic preamps are excellent and thus will give me cleaner Audio.
I also like STP and FCP X’s ability to refine the audio recorded (compressor, limiter etc.)
Can I ask what you are recording VO for?

June 29, 2011 at 9:10 am in reply to: Apple posted their FCX FAQ. Have a read, a beer, maybe a laugh.A couple of things…
At least we DO know FCP 7 will work with OS X Lion.
XML APIs a few weeks away is good news. OMF looks possible too, when some said that may not happen.
Audio Track assignment *IS* coming.
Give it time. I will say though, Apple should have posted this FAQ up from the get-go.

“Apple is a visionary company, and they’re in the privileged position of being right nearly all the time.
Adobe is, for all its girth in other verticals, hungry in the post industry. They’re not content to fight for third in the NLE market. They’ve got their eyes on first place. And they’re acutely aware that they don’t have what it takes to get there yet.”
…and that’s why they are on the dial-a-buddy trail. Good luck to them.

Wait.
Unless FCP 7 is actually not delivering what you need now and for the next 6-12 months.
I would rationally see if Apple gets its act together over 6-12mths time first before jumping ship.
Then, if Apple don’t deliver…make your choice.
I would pick Adobe to just be across, probably an easier transition for FCP users.
Let’s hope we don’t have to make that choice.

FCP X is missing a lot of meat and potatoes but I like the new Interface.
The irony is if Apple had released the new design into FCP first, then trickle it down to iMovie -then there wouldn’t have been a lot of this vitriol about it.

I was thinking the same thing Pat, if Auditioning works properly (a BIG if) then it could be a better way. Multicam was important but at the same time, flawed.

I remember the anguish with Snow Leopard as a quantum improved OS and it’s initial poor support of XDCAM etc.
FCP is a complete rework. Give it time to mature.
Anyone expecting this release to be turnkey for your Professional PostProduction house here and now is deluded and ignorant. Seriously.
For the Adobe fans, remember the guy who started that, started THIS.
I think the UI has enormous potential. It is waaay to early to make final calls on FCP X in the pro world.

That’s like being an IT Department manager and holding off your Software updates until Windows 8 etc comes out because you hear it’s good.
Are you serious?
Install FCP X side by side with your installation of FCP 7 and TEST. Like for weeks/months.
What’s more if you are worried about losing everything, export your FCP 7 as a MOV file and re-edit in FCP X from there if it’s that critical and you are stupid enough.
Scaaary, some people.

I use iChat Theater extensively, as I am a producer for a TV show where content is physically edited thousands of miles away (I am in West Coast of Australia – editors on East Coast, like being LA versus New York in the USA)!
For the most part it works quite well. It does glitch occasionally, and despite our ProRes 422 or XDCAM 422HD workflows, it works well for me, particularly with its Timecode display as well to make frame accurate editing calls.
HOWEVER – I do think good internet speeds both at the suite where the editor is and where you view the content is important.
I would suggest the better the UPLOAD speed each end has will help, as well as traditional download rates.
For me, ideally I would love to have a dedicated VPN for this sort of work as when we are finalising edits to commit to master, it would be nice to have just that little bit crisper and clearer quality. It’s still good enough but I have no doubt the better the WAN, the better the result.
PS. Final Cut Pro X better damn well have iChat Theater support!

I would go high-end Macbook Pro (15 or 17inch) – particularly if you are doing HD vision?
I have a 17inch MBP, the extra screen is great on the go (you wont always have the external monitor around) and it gives me an ability to connect eSATA.
You are dealing in vision here and you want scaleability…
