[Andrew Kimery] “To flesh out a bit more about his audio comment, it’s not just the number (PPro being able to do more than Avid) but also the fact that there are still tracks. Murch spoke at Adobe’s booth at IBC and it was semi-live Tweeted and, which his audio background, he pre-mixes a lot in the NLE and having tracks is not just familiar from his NLE experience but also from his DAW experience.”

[Tim Wilson] “I’m not surprised to hear that audio is part of why he still relies on tracks. Watch, and LISTEN, again to The Conversation. It’s easy to understand why he worked for a year on the audio, why he was nominated for an Oscar for it — and it’s easy for me to believe that he wouldn’t have necessarily have saved all that much time with having it digital.”

Do you think it might have anything to do with their recent focus on mobile apps for iOS?

[Tony West] “David, when you use X on a laptop do you use it in the dual viewer mode or single viewer mode?”

Hi Tony, I used FCPX for ingest and logging only, so single viewer mode works fine. I give most of the screen to the browser so that I can easily enter log notes for keyword ranges. Then Xto7 out to Premiere where I do my cutting. For me this is the best of both worlds! 🙂

This is exactly right. While FCPX certainly takes good advantage of advances in portable hardware, it’s the hardware that drives the design. Fast, powerful laptops and fast, cheap, portable storage have enabled mobile workflows across the board. All NLEs take advantage of these benefits. NLE choice is again a matter of individual taste and project need. Having used both FCPX and Premiere Pro on a laptop in the field, my experience has been that they both work equally well for the tasks I use them for. I see no reason why this wouldn’t be true for other NLEs as well.

Seconding what Chris said, Walter. Great info and very helpful.

A couple new questions:

What happens if we add Premiere Pro to the mix of applications?

We just got our first batch of test files back yesterday. They’re 2Kx2K previews of the 8K files. I did a quickie 12-layer comp test in Premiere (Chris, I think that was your suggestion, thanks) on my MacBook Pro and though it couldn’t playback in realtime, the rendered output worked great.

I’m thinking a 2K/8K proxy workflow in Premiere might be a good fit, especially since the masking tools in Pr CC are fine for our needs. I can also see benefits from dynamic linking between AE and Pr.

My understanding is Premiere takes advantage of GPU for final rendering so is this an argument for a fast CUDA-enabled GPU?

What about core count? Can Premiere take advantage of multiple cores/processors? We’re going with some flavor of dual Xeon, based on your and Chris’s feedback.

I assume maxing RAM and fast PCie storage is still the same.
