Halt all purchases!
We are a matter of days from the new Mac Pro “Tube” release. Wait for some reviews and benchmarks, then measure your price-performance-needs ratio and make the decision from there.
I’m curious to see performance comparisons of a top spec iMac vs a base model Mac Pro, then compare the price difference. Running a trusty old 2008 Mac Pro, with $6k in a “Tube” fund, I’m ready for an update as well.

Hey, nothing wrong with running old hardware and software if it suits your needs and makes you money. FCPX definitely comes with a bit of a learning curve, but with a little conceptual understanding and muscle memory retraining, I’m sure you’ll find it a very capable and powerful tool. Tons of free and paid training available, as well as the FCPX Techniques forum here on the COW, to get you up to speed relatively painlessly.

You have to first select the line of default text in the viewer, then the text editing window shows up in the inspector.

Ahh, do you mean the Project and Event folders in Finder? My first piece of advice would be to avoid messing around in FCPXs Finder level folders, do it all from within FCPX. Once you have a solid grasp of what FCPX does when you import/optimize/render/analyze etc. it’s ok to do some Finder level management though.
FCPX will automatically create folders at the root level of the drive, one called “Final Cut Projects” and another called “Final Cut Events”. Then each Project or Event you create within FCPX will automatically create its own folder structure as necessary within its respective folder. FCPX will only “see” Project and Event folders that are within their respective root level folder. If you move an event folder out of the “Final Cut Events” folder, that Event will be gone next time you open FCPX. Move the event folder back, and it shows up in FCPX again. Don’t create new folders and start putting files in them within these Project and Event folders.
The question wasn’t so much confusing, rather there wasn’t any question and I guessed at what you might be asking based on the subject line of the post.

Assuming you mean keyword collections, basically they are not folders at all. Instead, a keyword collection is like a filtered view of your Event. The Event itself will always have all the clips you import to it, selecting a keyword collection will only show clips (or portions of a clips) that have been tagged with the appropriate keyword. No clips are actually moved when added to a keyword collection, the clip is just tagged with the keyword
Selecting a keyword collection “hides” all clips that don’t have that keyword.
It’s actually really powerful once you get it figured out.

Here is my setup in a nutshell, FWIW.
Panasonic AW HS-50 compact live switcher. It has 4 HD-SDI inputs and 1 DVI input, dual SDI program outs, a secondary SDI out and 1 DVI out. Outputs are customizable with preview, multi-view and others. More features you can look into.
A Geffen VGA to DVI Scaler Plus on the DVI input for power point or other analog input needs.
Run SDI to AJA Hi-5 to convert to HDMI/DVI for IMAG, Hi-5 has SDI Loop-through for daisy chaining the signal to additional screens.
Mackie 1402 VLZ3 for live-mixing audio, two 19-21″ monitors for Program and Preview/Multiview.
2-4 HD-SDI cameras or AJA Ha-5 to convert HDMI cameras to SDI. Record in-camera.
Record switched video signal and mixed audio to AJA KiPro.
Overall a pretty compact and capable setup. I’m currently trying to figure out a good way to record at least 4 individual tracks of audio as well as the mixed feed to the Ki Pro… Hmmm

Are you deleting renders by choosing “delete render files” from the FCPX menu? Or doing it yourself in Finder?

What is your OS version? And what NLE and version number, I’m guessing FCP 7? FCP 7.0.3? What camera model and what video and audio format does it record?
Obviously this is not normal behavior, but I doubt your Mac has reached end of life.

It is a bit strange to leave behind two transitions with no media between them, but I guess fcpx treats the transitions as something you put there, so you have to delete it if you want it gone. Just for the integrity of “not doing something I didn’t say to do”, you know?
I’d use cut to remove the transitions, then paste them back on after finishing with Ken Burns.
You can also click the “shelf” to highlight and delete all of a secondary storyline same as lassoing.

I’d say go for i7 for multithreaded capability, fusion drive for the benefits that come from running your OS and Apps from an SSD, max out the RAM unless it’s user replaceable if so get minimum RAM and max it out from a reliable third party vendor and I’m not familiar with those GPUs so I don’t know.
Opposite of roli, I got my first Apple product in 2008, a Mac Pro and Final Cut Studio 2. Pure bliss ever since (after the slight learning curve, which was mostly full of “this is so much better” moments). I left behind a massive nightmare of problematic hardware and software that was used for work (video production/editing). Now, I’ve been “assimilated” into the “locked in” “island universe” of the “Apple ecosystem”. Which actually means that I can do anything and everything the average person in this field needs too, run applications, collaborate with clients etc. etc. Did you know every Mac ships with the ability to install windows? yeah, Macs are PCs too. So in buying a Mac you get beautifully designed hardware, Apples awesome OS X and other apps, incredible customer support as well as a windows box if you want it to be one. Buy a new windows box and you get the “Metro interface”, haha.
iCloud, iOS, OS X and Apple Hardware, do it, do it, do it. If I could just help one person to get to know OS X and then let them decide for themselves, for each person roli tries to stop…
So the red square with an x to close a window is now a red circle and on the other side in OS X, control panel is called system preferences and the control keys functions are on a new key called command… You still save files in folders, edit in your NLE of choice (FCPX is actually very good) browse the web, send emails, or whatever. Not that hard to get used to. Oh, don’t forget to turn on right-click, that’s a really big problem for new users.
The statement of every time you turn on a Mac you don’t know if it will work like last time is laughable at best. What? Is this a windows user complaining about OS X updates? I don’t get it. But that problem is basically the reason I left windows. You will find a very helpful community of Apple users ready to assist you in getting accustomed to your new Mac.
Also, notice rolis sig has no mention of a windows PC, but he proudly includes the specs of his Mac Pro for all to see every time he posts. Odd for an Apple hater, I’d expect a “my custom, cobbled together mashup of parts, PC build is cheaper and faster than your Mac” type of specs. And as if “never putting the Mac on the internet” is somehow supposed to mean he maintains a perfect system, uncorrupt, that will last forever. Ridiculous and foolish.
Sorry, I just can’t stand to see this nonsense posted. Ken, I’m sure you were able to look right past his crazy post. I obviously couldn’t.

How did deleting render files make you have to redo moves/crops etc? That’s not right.
