Personally, I like change and I love lerning. What I don’t like is not being able to get my projects done because of major, glaring lack of features. Specifically, no multiclip, no XML support, and not output to tape. How, exactly, do you propose I send my project to Logic for surround mastering? How do I output to Betacam for the broadcast houses that need it? (yes, it is still the standard in m any places). How do you propose I edit a 2 hour+ show with three cameras without multiclip?

It’s precisely because I like some of the new features in FCP X that I am pissed. 64 bit support, color synching, magnetic timelines, sample-accurate audio handling, the new file management…all awesome features that would dramatically improve my editing workflow. All useless for 95% of what I do because basic things are missing.

Not even close. What makes FCS7s multiclip practical is the fact that you can see all relevant angles and switch in real time. I was afraid of this…now I have to decide if X is worth purchasing for the one or two projects a year I have that doesn’t require it…

I’ll add to that chorus. I had to buy Logic because STP would crash nearly every time I tried saving my project. Granted, I was working with feature-length projects with at least 8 continuous tracks (up to 40 for some projects), but I still thought this problem was unacceptable, considering Logic handled the same amount of tracks and duration with ease. I now use it only for simple, single-track editing that I can round-trip from FCP. Anything more complicated I send to Logic.

You misunderstand. I’m all for learning new workflows, but whatever the changes are multiclip simply will not function without simultaneous viewing of all angles. Perhaps you don’t work with multiclip enough to appreciate this, but I can assure you that without this feature, however it’s implemented, multiclip would be broken. I agree that the current implementation could use improvement, particularly in regards to working with different types of source media. I am looking forward to almost all of the changes I have seen in FCX so far, so don’t get the idea that I’m “in love with the way FCP works right now”.

The thing is, I would actually like to upgrade to X asap if it supports multiclip editing, because the features I have seen will save me a ton of time. It’s not that I’m saying “I can’t go on without upgrading”; I know that the current version of FCP works just fine. I would just hate to have to miss out on all the innovations Apple has included in the new version due to their decision to remove the viewer window.

That being said, I’m am more than willing to learn a new workflow for multiclip editing, assuming it works just as well. I just don’t see how that is possible if the new workflow doesn’t include simultaneous realtime viewing of all angles. My main reason for this post was merely to see what people’s opinions were; I know that nobody knows for certain yet.

Trying to edit a 2 hour, 3 camera shoot using the filmstrip and without a multi-view monitor would be an absolute nightmare. As it is now, it works a lot like a live switcher, which I like. I’m sure the new features can be used intelligently to make multiclip better, but without being able to see and switch multiple angles simultaneously and in real time it’s a no-go. I would end up not using the new FCX enough to justify even the $300 price, which would be a REAL shame, because I like everything else about it.

Agreed. If FCX doesn’t have this, it’s a no-go, regardless of how much I may like the interface (and I do).

  • I don’t mind the new window, and in fact am excited by some of the possibilities that the new way of organizing clips means. However, I am a bit worried about multiclip. How will that be handled? If FCPX has done away with that feature altogether, that is a serious deal-breaker for me.

Honestly, I can live without Log and Capture, so long as there are good 3rd party alternatives (that won’t cost me an arm and a leg). What I am more interested in is outputting to tape, a la the current “print to video” or “edit to tape” features. Without that, it really would be a deal-breaker. That, and if they get rid of multiclip editing.
