I don’t know how the airlines currently handle this issue because, ever since years ago paying insanely high airline baggage fees and also having a $6k monitor “lost” by an airline, I’ve always used FedEx (or UPS since that’s my current FT employer’s preference). I’ve consistently found shipping gear very reliable, less hassle and far less issues with gear lost, stolen or damaged. However, I’ve yet to need to go to multiple cities without enough time to ship gear.

Especially considering that the airline industry is already in very bad shape and cutting costs everywhere, I would guess that exceptions for “media people” would be limited to TV/film crews with the related credentials, rather than just anyone with a camera, but you never know … it’s worth a shot I suppose.

As far as the original question about cases, I do realize that they tend to be more expensive than the newer players, but Porta-Brace and Kata are always worth at least looking at.

Hmmm…very weird. I’ve never seen that happen before so I’ve no idea what could cause it … sorry.

Obviously you want to get that resolved so perhaps submit a bug report to Adobe and post on the Adobe forum as well.

In the meantime, it may not have to affect your ability to time to the beat of music since you should still be able to generate layer markers based on what you’re hearing during RAM preview by hitting the * key on each beat.

May 2, 2011 at 6:20 pm in reply to: 64 bit /camcorder vs dslr

It doesn’t seem to make sense to spend money getting a new 32-bit system (hardware or software) since they’re on the way out and will likely be relegated to door stop status before too long.

CS5 is way better than CS4 … sorry, but it seems one can only respond to a vague question with a vague answer.

Someone else can probably be more help than I with the DSLR question.

By the way, the After Effects forum doesn’t really seem the appropriate forum for any of those questions.

  • Just to add to Joey’s answer something related that you might find useful to know … there are scripts out there that can run on a batch of MOVs to change all of them to High Quality without having to open each one manually. I don’t recall the names or exactly where to find since I try my best to avoid DV footage like the plague, but I’m sure Google will know where to find them.

  • I’m not sure I understand what you’re getting at so I’m, therefore, not sure this is telling you anything you don’t already know, but the answer is yes since adjustment layers affect every layer beneath them … so, the top adjustment layer is effectively adjusting the bottom adjustment layer (along with every other layer beneath it).

May 2, 2011 at 5:59 pm in reply to: move CTI specific frames

Yes, the way Dave L. described is how it works in AE … you have to type + or – then 27 to move 27 frames forward or backward … I assume it works that way because there has to be a way to distinguish between moving forward or backwards … if you just type 27, it will just go to frame 27 regardless of the current position.

By the way, basic math functions also work in most other AE fields too … you can type +, -, * (multiply), or / (divide) to change values like position, rotation, scale, etc. instead of moving in random increments. I usually change values by just dragging the number field to the left or right, but the math way comes in very handy when working on animations or layer changes that have to be symmetrical or precise in some other way … letting AE do the math keeps me from overworking my little pea brain.

Yes, by the time you factor in a speed ring or two to fit it onto different size lights, you can easily spend $300 on just one soft box, never mind lights to put it on. Seems like buying used gear or renting as needed will be your only choices … beyond shooting everything outdoors on a sunny day or trying to fix lighting issues in post, which can get much more expensive in the long run.

  • I’ve seen, but haven’t used Audacity, but figured I’d offer some info until/unless someone else offers a more Audacity-specific reply … all you need is a DeBreath filter (or Noise Gate) with properly adjusted settings … if Audacity supports VST filters as most audio editors do now, there are tons of free VST filters available for download … try a Google search for “free VST DeBreath or Gate”. Of course, the best VST filters aren’t free (i.e., Waves), but there are some pretty darn good free ones of all types out there.

[Ronald Lindeboom] “aren’t ALL lawyers named The Finger?”
I guess you have a point there, Ron … mine is not just any old finger though. ;~)

[Ronald Lindeboom] “I instantly busted up laughing”
I must admit, I was quite proud of myself with that one … made myself cry as I was writing it. ;~)

I couldn’t remember Mr. Thing’s given name, but I now recognize the err of my ways and repent in shame.

Please direct any angry letters from the Equal Rights for the Torsoly Challenged group to my attorney … The Finger. ;~)
