I’m likely in a minority here in these forums, but I greatly prefer to do things like this manually to make sure I understand what is being done and how much is being done. I always take my time and if there’s a mistake, I only have one person to blame. I’m also very careful to back up before hand. I never used or needed Event Manager and my truck is a 5-speed stick with no auto windows or door locks, so at least I’m consistent in my perspective.

On a completely different subject, I haven’t seen any of your work in at least a year. Do you have any new stuff up at Vimeo?

Probably been months or longer since I went through and cleaned up render files and I need to go in and do it soon. I’m still on 10.0.x.

If I remember correctly, via the Finder, you can delete the files within the folders or simply drag the complete folders to the trash as FCPX will create new folders when it creates new render files.

Am I remembering correctly?

Yep, they seem to be trouble free in FCPX for my experience. I was just wondering if the thinking had changed on their use.

I still can’t really email .pngs to people that may be on Windows. Whenever I email a screenshot I always convert it in Preview to a .jpg first so I don’t have to go through the process again later when they complain that they can’t “see” the picture.

As a slight aside to the topic here…

I haven’t thought about this since the beginnings of FCPX, but although it can handle many formats, is it still assumed that the default photo format should be a .png? I seem to remember someone saying that since FCPX outputs stills as a .png that this would be the format it “likes” best.

That’s been my experience with the Adobe Connect support. I thought T-Mobile support was the worst, not anymore. Escalating doesn’t seem to help much either.

Would only apply to H.264 or also x264? I’m on a i7 17″ MBP and faster encodes would give me a legit reason to move from 3.5.3 to 4.1.

Yes, you would need to download the codec and install it. It very much beats out the default H.264. Here’s a couple of links if they are still good:

My most recent problem is that it appears the Apple versions of H.264 and even x264 when exported as a standard .mp4 from Compressor (or QT 7 or FCPX) don’t work with the newer versions of Android devices. They used to work fine with Android, Flash Players, and iDevices, but no longer. All my video streams from a proprietary Flash Player on my websites with HTML5 fall back, so this is an issue for me. I will likely need to re-export about 75 40-minute projects from FCPX and then re-encode them as .mp4 in a non-Apple app. I did find that using MPEG Streamclip and the x264 encoder played nicely with the newer Android devices. I haven’t taken the time yet to figure out why MPEG Streamclip worked or re-do the 75 videos, but I suppose I will need to do it soon as I had another complaint this morning. This likely wouldn’t affect you or most people here at the Cow, but I thought I’d mention it since it was fresh on my mind.

I’ve had enough problems with MS Office over the years that I finally just gave up. I made the switch to OpenOffice and have not had any problems with any Excel or Word docs opening correctly (which is all I need). The last time I tried to upgrade MS Office 2008 to be current (didn’t really need to upgrade, but I did), it hosed Word and to a lesser extent Excel. From that point forward, every time I closed a doc, it crashed the app. I’m happy in OpenOffice land now.
