  • You can try adjusting the WM Player’s “Video Accelerations Settings”
On WMP’s menu select Tools > Options > Performance Tab > Advanced button
Then, turn off “Use Overlays”. If that doesn’t help, mess with some of the other options to see if you can make it work.

    Hope this helps.

  • [alfred] “is it correct to split a motion menu in two different cells to separate the introduction and the highlighting section?”

    Yes, that approach should work.

[alfred] ” have tried with several VM COMMANDS with no results.”
That is the right idea. I am not familiar with DVD Lab Pro and how it represents the commands or it’s proceedures for setting commands. In Scenarist you would put a command in the post PGC section (commands that execute after the PGC finishes playing, in this case the menu’s PGC) to link to the cell (PGC#, a.k.a. chapter#) that represents the start of the highlight area. So investigate the linking commands available in DVDLP, you should find the correct VM command is one of those.

    Hope this helps.

Is the drive formatted as NTSF?

  • A commonly used value is 10% of the screen dimension. So a 720×480 pixel screen would use a margin of 72 pixels on each side and 48 pixels on the top/bottom. A common “safe action” area uses 5% of the dimension. I often split the difference as most modern TVs do not overscan as much as the older sets did. New flat panel or HD displays often have little or no overscan.

[BazinoZ] “Is it because it has 5 times more users?”
Actually, it’s my understanding that Premiere is the one with most users. Don’t think that’s true? Read this COW Post.

[BazinoZ] “Is it because it has 5 times more bugs/problems/features.”
Perhaps because Mac users don’t think they should have to rtfm. To quote my (mac biggot) brother-in-law, “If it’s not intuitive, it’s not mac.” But asking for explanations on a forum is OK cause it’s cool.

[BazinoZ] “Is it because it takes 5 times more to render so they have more idle time on their hands?”
LOL. Probably. Or maybe it’s because their business isn’t all that busy.

[BazinoZ] “Is it because it has far more friendlier folk?”
    See previous.

[BazinoZ] “Is it because the don’t rely on Microsoft as an OS and have more idle time on their hands?”
I cannot answer that without turning this into a slagging thread.

Seriously. I have used both extensively and, all things considered, find them about equal. Each has strong and weak points, each has it’s joys and aggravations. As far as Win vs OSX, they seem to me more and more alike as time goes on. Again each with good and bad aspects. I don’t really care what the tool is as long as the work gets done.

Thanks Steve for taking the time to respond. Your assertions are absolutely correct.

    [Steven L. Gotz] “I don’t shoot D1. Do you? D1”

Actually, Yes I do. I still do a large amount of work on Discreet and Avid systems from Beta sources. Years of using these systems has made the 720×540 starting point an unquestioned habit.

If I think back a few years to when I was using FCP for DV format work I do remember using 720×534 as the starting point for PhotoShop graphics. At the time PhotoShop didn’t have the pixel aspect ratio feature so using an unconstrained resize was SOP. Since the introduction of PhotoShop CS I have been using the DV preset and just plain forgot about “the old ways”.

Thanks for reactivating some old neurons.

[Steven L. Gotz] “If you have a 720X534 it sees it as square pixels”

Just curious, how did you come up with that size? 720×540 has a 4×3 aspect ratio and is the dimension provided by the Photoshop CS NTSC D1 Square Pix new file preset.

[jimmybee500] “Can you PSD sequences btw?”

Good question. Have not tried it myself but it should work.

You could always use the old trick of creating the PS at 720×540 (NTSC) and then, save to TGA, then do a constrained resize to 720×480 (I assume a DV project) on the TGAs. Then, even though PPro will see a PAR of 1.0 it should display correctly. I think this will work but I may have thought too hard about this and confused myself.

[jimmybee500] “Targas cannot hold any pixel aspect info can they?”
Not as far as I know. PSD is the only format that I’m aware of that does. Could you use those, using a transparent background instead of an alpha channel? PPro will see the transparency for what it is – transparent.
