How I use Levelator is to run it through my main dialogue or VO track and then mix everything else according to that. Since I output for the web, Levelator’s default output to -1db works for me. After I’m done in Final Cut, where I do my mixing, I will export a 2 channel AIFF to STP to check the peaks, maybe manually adjust them if something pops a little to much, then do a peak normalizing to -1db again. In your case it would be -10db.
So mainly I find it helpful to use Levelator for the main track, the track I’m going to mix everything against, but not the whole mix.

I have issues too, I have posted about it, I have read other posts about it, and there seems to be no answer. People mainly just say your drives aren’t fast enough. I shoot and edit XDCAM EX 1080p30 and if I just lay video in the timeline everything is fine. Once I start adding graphics all hell breaks loose. Stuttering, dropped frames, it just won’t play with any consistency. And this is a fully rendered, codec/sequence setting matching timeline. I have never had this problem before, even back in the day working on a Video Toaster 4000 with a DPS PAR card. If I convert the footage to ProRes it all plays fine, and any other codec works fine too.
I think there are issues with the XDCAM EX codec, but maybe just in Snow Leopard. I don’t remember this happening with 6.0.6 and Leopard, but haven’t rolled back to test the theory.
Are you on Snow Leopard with FC 7.0.1?

If you option select the clip it will select the specific clip you click on. I’ve found safer and faster than turning off linking.

December 10, 2009 at 4:33 pm in reply to: qmaster compressor does not work in Snow Leopard: Help~When I did a clean install of Snow Leopard and FCS 3 the same thing happened to me but it was user error. I’m not sure, but I think Apple may have switched the order of the Services list, so when I clicked on “Options for selected service” it was actually changing the instances on “Rendering” for Shake and not for Compressor, so nothing happened. When I highlighted Compressor, changed the instances appropriate for my machine, Compressor started flying on all cores. I also have Managed checked. So just double check you have Compressor highlighted when selecting the number of instances.

If you have wireframes viewable you can right click on the keyframe in the canvas and choose Ease In/Ease Out, which also gives you a bezier handle.

Hey Elizabeth,
I certainly weigh in on doing a clean install, but I also feel the only way to do a real clean install is to redo the whole computer. I used FCS Remover and reinstalled and still had problems. After that I reinstalled the whole system and still had the same problems. I noticed that FCS Remover didn’t uninstall everything, things like plugins were still there, so I don’t know if there’s something like a third party driver causing my problem.
I’m just hoping a new update will clear it up, I check often for one.

I have the same issues. Things that were not dropping in FC 6 are now. I can not even play EX1 footage with dropping frames, let alone a rendered timeline, and I know the footage and timeline settings match. Though Pro Res seems to play fine, so since I render my effects to Pro Res they play at those points, but real time effects and graphics that have a gray bar drop frames. I replaced my hba, reinitialized my raid, reinstalled OSX, reinstalled FCS, and nothing has worked. I have never had dropped frame issues before, ever.
It looks like a few people have some issues, but I’m still trying to figure out if it’s me. I would think if it’s Final Cut there would be a lot more people complaining.
