First of all Craig, frankly, my opinion is the only one that means anything to me at this point. I use to be married, and then I didn’t have any opinion :)) It was always given to me.
If you love FCPX, great. I’m thrilled for you. Use it, make money with it. That’s great. So much of what I read these days are people “waiting” for the next upgrade, or more recently, asking for features to be returned.
Now, I don’t know about you, but I waited for a meaningful update from apple on FCP7. In fact, I waited for the same 2 plus years we all did. When Adobe introduced Premiere Pro CS 5.0, the power and real time attracted me to it, but being a loyal fan of FCP, I said to myself, No, Darren, don’t make the move. Adobe has shown what our new computers could do. Apple will be even more impressive as they rewrite FCP7. That same 2 year wait was also for a more up to date MacPro.
Apple makes a big deal in April at the WWFCUG meeting. They kept it close to their chests, but still it looked like new features were going to be great. Then, it’s released. Nothing. The majority of users, guys like me who make a living doing this looked at what they released and just said why?
Since then, the users have split into two camps. Those who stay and wait for the future to some and those who make their own futures, and make a jump to something that is more compatible with the way they think, and have operated for years. And guess what, they both have more real time power, etc.
Like I said. If you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands. I’m not doing it for CFPX.
Good Luck

I’ll apologize to you all then, of course you are each free to make your mind’s up.
I stated an opinion on the debate. In my opinion, there is little to no future with FCPX.
Enjoy

Don’t worry about Mitch and his condescending ways. He’s been doing that stuff for as long as I’ve known him, which is 1994.
Lots of people put him down, they just look at his work!

The debate has been long and hard fought. In my opinion, and that of others, Apple dropped the ball. FCPX and it’s suite of products no longer operates or have the tools most editors need. If you and or your company can make it with FCPX, I am happy for you. It is one of the lowest cost solutions going.
But if what you do requires a more professional model – WITH SUPPORT, which Apple no longer provides to FCP7 users, needs integration with software like After Effects, Photoshop, Encoders, etc. FCPX is not that product.
You can argue that some people sell work that has been edited in iMovie. That is perfectly true. Does it make it a professional editing tool. No. Do people make money with it. Yes.
What I was trying to point out is that while Apple is trying to patch their application with features that have made FCPX not an option for many post houses, Adobe is putting their resources toward some tools and features that will make their product even more feature rich that they are today.
I really couldn’t care less about the FCPX debate. If you drank the Kool-Aid, fine by me. I have been an apple user since 1988. I have owned as many as 5 Apple Edit Suites at the same time, I have had one of each iPod, and iPhone 3G, 3Gs and 4. I have had both iPads. I am a fan.
Moving to the PC was a tough decision, but, like every editor, I had used Premiere in the past, so jumping to it now was not a big issue. The realtime, the extra features Premiere added – all making my life easier.

Apple is still trying to make a product that functions, while Adobe is adding features that Apple can only dream about.

When you say things like ” wait until you see what’s coming soon”. You might get confused for being an Apple employee, or Owner! ;))
Seriously, I have aked Premiere Pro 5.5 to look for updates, and to no results. Any idea when this might be fixed?
Otherwise, how’s it done.
I am pleased with my move to CS 5.5, and ( gulp) even my more to Windows 7

Well, she’s 11.5. By the time she enters university or college, or Art college, there will be so many changes in our industry it won’t matter what she learned on.
The difference between someone who can edit, and someone who knows some software is the editor knows how to tell a story. What ever software you give her, make sure she learns how to tell a story. That will make the most difference in her years to come.
Oh, and don’t be disappointed if at 11.75, she changes her mind and wants to be a director or something in fashion! :))

I think you will get just s much bang for your buck with a GTX570, or 580. It’s about half the price of the card you have spec’d, and I’m not sure it’s not overkill.
Just a thought

You can do it for a lot less that the price you are talking about. I just did it 2 weeks ago and I am thrilled.
1. Off the shelf HP AMD II – 6 core @2.9Ghz, 8GB RAM, 1.5 TB hard drive, and the usual IO
2.Remove the video card, and buy one of the recommended cards. I spent $339 on an Nvidia GTX 570 wit 1.28GB of DDR3
3. I purchased a SATA 3 PCIE card and put in 2 X 3TB SATA III drives software raided drives (5.5TB total)
4. I bought an ESata external card to feed my G-Raid 4TB raid system.
Everything else is the software which you can cross grade.
I spent $1200.00 on the hardware. I get 8-10 layers (That’s how much I have tried) of HD (XDCAM EX) of video with animation, and FX on every layer. I might get more for an additional $100 for 16GB of RAM, the max the system can take.
I finished my last FCP 7 project today, and will begin my first non testing CS5.5 project on Monday.
Worth every penny. Now, I will tell you I plan on keeping the Mac’s, as they work better than anything on the internet, and I don’t worry about virus, etc. I consider my PC an Editing Machine. I come from the old days, when we used 3/4 inch tape, and a Special FX generator, so to call this PC an edit only system is not an issue for me, especially as it cost so little to get so much.
Good Luck
