[Robert Dodson] “Edit: Is “Warp Layer” in Timewarp supposed to accomplish what I’m thinking? The official description is a bit too vague for me to make sense of, it doesn’t seem to come up in tutorials, and I can’t make sense of it by just messing around with it.”

That seems to be what they had in mind for the Warp Layer, although I can’t figure out how it’s supposed to work either.

There are a couple of effects from RE:Vision FX that allow you to specify an alternate motion source. Reel Smart Motion Blur and Twixtor come to mind:

Twixtor Pro even allows you to generate red/green Motion Vectors from the footage that can be used to drive other effects within AE such as Trapcode’s Form or a Displacement Map.

Do the layers have motion blur enabled? AE tends to do this sort of thing when layers share the same z-space, and will almost certainly do it if they have motion blur enabled.

  • The temporalWiggle() function will get closest to what you’re describing without having to write a lot of code. This may still cause your clip to play backwards (especially at higher amplitudes) but you can check your time remap property in the graph editor while varying the values to get something that works for you.

The audio layer should be driving the pumping the way you’ve described your set up, so if you’re not getting the BPM that you want then you may need to start playing with the audio file.

I wouldn’t recommend pre-rendering every layer by itself. Instead start by grouping any layers that you can into pre-comps. Hopefully you’ll be able to consolidate a lot of the layers this way, then you can pre-render the pre-comps.

This is assuming that you won’t need to change the transform properties or effects on individual layers in the future.

  • [Jeff Bobbington] “The expression worked great, so I replaced any values which were unique to that layers number, to a slider number to match the #NUMBER of that layer.”

If the #NUMBER of the layer has a predictable relationship to the index of that layer then you could automate this in the expression.

index returns the index of the layer as seen in the timeline.

Not sure the details of your project, but if you need these keyframes to remain equivalent have you considered just parenting your layer to a Null and using that to offset the position?

If that doesn’t help then more explanation of what you’re trying to achieve might be necessary!

[Chris Wood] “Unfortunately, no matter what PNG settings I use, I end up with a black and white image, where really I just want the shadows and literally nothing else (everything else just transparent)”

Looks to me like you could invert that shadow render and use that as alpha for a black layer in photoshop or AE.

Is there a reason you wouldn’t want to just multiply this shadow pass into your image though?

May 4, 2012 at 12:12 am in reply to: Text animation and drop shadow?

Are you using any blending modes on your text layer? How are you linking the text to the Nulls? Can you animate the text at all on its own?

  • Make sure you’re using the Adaptive Resolution Fast Preview mode and not OpenGL.
