there was a misunderstanding on my side, I thought you´ve put a 4.9GB-mov-file on the DVD.

if you´ve allready created a self-contained movie, and iDVD transcoded it to MPEG2, and it wont match a single-layer-DVD, I think it´s a longer film, so you´ll get in trouble with the size of the DVD.

one reason why this could happen is, because iDVD is using PCM (wav) audio instead of dolby digital audio, that is much smaller.

PCM audio have 1.5Mbit/s where dolby digital stereo have 192kbit/s, that is appox. 7.8 times smaller.

if you would like to start with compressor and DVD SP, you should start with your bitbudgeting.

all you need to know about bitbudgeting is, depending on the max. capacity of the physical media, as more film(-lenth) you´ll put on the disk, the smaller will get your data-rate.

and to author a disk within DVD SP could be simple as well if you start with a simple one.

if your input-video have 24fps, you´ve choosen the wrong DVD-output-setting.

you need to go 24fps progressive NTSC, otherwise you´ll get trouble.

you don´t need to set an end-action at every chapter-point to jump to the next chapter.

it´ll play smoothly if you delete the end-actions of the chapter-marker.

we never had any problem with bitrates arround 8-8.5 MBit on DVD+/-R, same with DL-DVDs.

but if you will be sure that bitrate wont cause a problem you might stay a bit below 8Mbit.

Hi Anne,
all you need to do is an quicktime-movie-export as selfcontained mov to your harddisk.

then you need to open iDVD and drag this film into iDVD, so you can create a DVD out of it. iDVD itself will transcode your video to SD-MPEG2, so you´ll get a full working DVD.

if you´ve got FCP 6.06 you´ll have DVD Studio Pro+Compressor as well. with these tools you´ll have a much better control over your encoding and the resulting DVD.

blu-ray-spec is 1080i50, 1080i60, 1080p23.98, 1080p24, but 25/50frames wont work in most US-players as I mentioned before.

so you need to do a frame-rate-conversion. I would go to 24p as it is a common workflow.

there are 2 possibilties:

1. converting from 25 to 24fps with the same duration/running time
2. conforming from 25 to 24fps while the film will get 4% slower and longer

you can use AfterEffects to do both ways, but keep in mind that you need to slow down your audio as well if you´ll conform from 25 to 24p.

one good thing is, that you´ve got progressive 4K, so you won´t need to deinterlace the material anyway.

as AE have a good scaling-algorithm you can use it to downscale your 4K to 1080 as well. another possibility is to use MPEG Streamclip (freeware) to do so – just google for it – it´s the swiss knife in every editors toolbox.

if your blu-ray need to play in PAL and NTSC-land, the best way is to go 1080p24 or 1080p23.98.

you need to conform your 25fps-material, because 25/50 frames wont be played in most US-BD-players.

I have created a workflow using apples cinema tools, but you can do it as well with adobe AE:

I would encode the BD in H264 and would take a Bitrate arround 25MBit target-rate and max. bitrate arround 30MBit.

never had any problems with this settings.

Hi Hillary,
if your disk will only have 30min. you can create your own preset with CBR 7.8MBit, and dolby digital audio@192kbit/s for stereo-sound.

there are also some adjustments necessary on the dolby-setting to get an 1:1-sound, you need to set the dialoge-normalisation to -31dBfs and you need to turn off the compression on the preprocessing-tab, otherwise it´ll be compressed.

the main problem is the presentation!

if the video will be presented with beamers, you need to know how the players are connected to the beamer. if they use a composite or component-connection the beamer wil expect interlaced material. if it´ll have an HDMI-connection you need to look for the dvd-player-settings as well, what it´ll output to the beamer, is it progressive or interlaced.

keep in mind that something needs to do the de-interlacing! maybe the beamer, maybe the player itself.

could you please tell us at what framerate you´ve shot the films?
