I found the 300 to be almost feather light for a camera of it’s structure, what cameras are you used to shooting with? I used the AB Dionic 90s and with that, the camera was barely over 10lbs. For a pro full shoulder mount camera, it is the lightest one on the market.
The noise issue, I guess it is all in the eye of the beholder. In comparison to the antiseptically clean signal that the Sony EX1/EX3 record, yes, the Panasonic does have more noise, but in comparison to the HVX200 and the HPX170, the 300 is quite clean. To me, the Sonys are too clean, they look very 60i Discovery Channel HD even when shooting in progressive. The Panasonic looks very much like nicely shot S16 to me, some grain but it doesn’t bother me in the least. Different strokes I guess?

It sounds to me like most of the clips you are liking have probably had some pretty extensive color correction. How good are you with color correction and Magic Bullet?
I shoot BPress because it has less noise than either of the CineLike modes. The idea is generally to shoot a “flat negative” and tweak the images with FCP’s three way or with Color and really make them sing.

I have not shot with the EX1R, but have shot a lot with the EX1/EX3 and the HPX300 (as a matter of fact, I am shooting a regional PSA Monday with a 300).
Th 300 is undoubtedly a better camera from a handling and ergonomic standpoint. The EX1 and EX3 feel like a brick with a viewfinder and am unbalanced brick at that. The EX1 is antiseptically clean, too clean for my taste. The signal looks like really clean video to me ala Discovery Channel 60i nature shows, even when shooting in progressive. The 300 has more vibrant colors with that Panasonic look to it. You can tweak the EX1/EX3 colors but to me, they never look as good as the Panasonic colors. YMMV, this is all personal.
The 300 has less skew than the EX1/EX3 in 720 modes but more in skew in 1080 modes. Not sure if they changed the skew signature on the EX1R? The 300 must be moved like a cinema camera and it is fine. If you wave it around like a video camera, you will see skew in 1080 modes. It is not a great camera for extreme sports on long lenses and if shot red carpets or weddings for a living, even with the FBC fix, I would consider a CCD camera instead of the 300 or the EX1R.
Different strokes. I hate the Sony’s ergonomics, every time I shoot with it handheld, I end up with a sore wrist, it is totally unbalanced and the look is nice but not as good looking as the 300 is for many situations. If you like the look of the HVX200 and the HPX170 (I have owned both), the 300 looks like a better and cleaner version with more detail and a better codec.
As far as codecs, no comparison. XDCAM EX is not a favorite of mine, it is an antiquated long GOP MPEG 2 structure while the AVC INTRA100 codec is the most modern and sophisticated camera codec on the market. Everyone I know who has shot AVC INTRA100 falls in love with it. XDCAM EX is serviceable but definitely more limited in post with its 4:2:0 35Mbps structure.
The Sony is a good camera, I am not slamming it, but it is not better than the 300. It is different than the 300. I would never spend this amount of money with shooting with both cameras before making a decision. FWIW, I could be happy with either if I was given but if I am writing the check, the 300 wins out for my needs.

I can dump 32GB cards with my G4 PB with no verification in 14 minutes. 70 minutes seems ridiculous, USB is pointless with P2. Firewire seems to work MUCH better and a built-in PCMCIA card seems even better than that. If I was stuck with those kinds of dumping times, P2 would be a no-go for me.

I have not ran into that because I am avoiding Snow like the plague. I have heard nothing but compatibility issues with it and FCS, Photoshop, etc. all of the programs I use on a daily basis so I am out until Apple has a few more months to implement bug fixes.

Sure, the 300 does do VFR, I shot a lot of this video https://www.triplanevideo.com/new_metro.htm with it at 48fps and 60 fps.
What it doesn’t do that bums me out, is let me map the VFR function to a user button as I do on my HPX170. That makes the VFR function so much quicker and easier to use.
Mark, we must have different standards. The project in the link above is being used for theatrical projection and I have had zero complaints from the director, editor or client on excess noise. I shoot regularly with the HVX200, HPX170 and EX1 and to my eye, the 300 is cleaner than the two little Panasonics and almost as clean as the EX1. IMHO, the EX1 is too clean, it looks very sterile, but that is just me. Definitely not as clean as the 2700/3700 level cams but for $7,000.00, you aren’t going to get a much cleaner signal.

Not to be too pedantic, but the HVX200A does not shoot DVCAM, DVCAM is a Sony only format that features a higher tape run rate than regular DV does, even though the two formats are identical electronically.
The HVX200A shoots DV format to Mini DV tapes.

I don’t know, seems crazy to pay that much for a 200A when I have been seeing 200s going used for $1,750.00. 200A is better but outdated too.
