A fundamental business principle: don’t try to read their minds. Ask ’em.
You’re right, it will be less than what you’re making now. My step into corporate life cost me tens of thousands of dollars. Ten years later, I still wasn’t making as much as when I was paying myself.
But add 30% for the value of benefits (more if they’re matching 401K…probably not in your case), security (including how few salaried gigs are left), the almost incalculable value of paid vacation and sick leave…my guess is that you’ll know IMMEDIATELY whether you’ll want to take their offer, the SECOND you hear what it is.
Keep in mind that there’s a sense in which nobody currently working has ANY advice to offer you about rates. Chances are good that they were hired in a different climate, and came in at a higher level that you may never reach. That’s the way the calendar crumbles.
So ask them. I’m curious how you’ll feel about their offer, and would certainly love to hear how it turns out.
Hey, and FWIW, consider the general lack of challenge as one of the benefits. Having extra mental bandwidth for yourself is worth a whole, whole lot.

Seriously guys, Sascha should be *rewarded* for knowing that an iMac is sub-pro. He’s asking about just launching an application, not working in it. Compare this to many others who post elsewhere who really, really don’t want to hear anything of the sort. Hey, Apple makes the computer – so Apple software should just WORK on it, right?
Sascha, in general, opening the app and poking around it on a 27″ screen isn’t such a bad idea. Certainly acres more real estate that a laptop. But as Ola points out, there are some basic technology limitations that mean it likely won’t work.
Coupla other notes: One, while there are things that iMacs CAN’T do, there are some quite surprising things that they CAN do…especially in a configuration like Sascha’s that doesn’t call for heavy lifting.
Two, if I have a choice to do anything on my laptop or my iPad, I think twice. Many times, there’s no choice, but no question which is more fun. 🙂

This gets very simple very fast. Do you have a set of installation DVDs for Final Cut Pro? Do you have a manual? Do you have a box?
If so, simply enter the license information again when you reinstall.
If you don’t have all of those things, you got ripped off by the guy you bought it from, and there’s nothing we can do to help.
My guess is that you tried to buy in good faith, and you got ripped off…but either way, there’s nothing we can do to help you. Sorry.

That’s it exactly. The movie shows exactly how one of the ads looked – pasted below.
The entire content of the ad was “Googling yourself is a lot of fun. Hiring me is fun, too.”
He targeted 5 guys, got replies from 4 of them, and job offers from 2 of them.
Nobody else was bidding on the names, so he got them for 10 cents/click each. The whole campaign cost him $6.
Here are a couple more details, but you’ve already heard the best stuff.

The point isnt’ that the guy had 15 cameras. It’s that NONE of them was locked down or moving slowly. No cranes or steadicams. They were attached to helmets, gun sights, handheld, etc., and both running and gunning. While Shane was the DP, the people operating the cameras were hardly experts.
As others have noted here, they’re using them on 24. The picture from the set that I saw was handheld – using a film-style rig, but handheld…in this case, though, a very experienced operator.
So if the question is, can you use a 5D Mk II for handheld action, specifically for battle scenes as per Mark’s question, the answer is, Yes. Absolutely. It’s happening now, on features, and feature-scale TV, and happening more all the time.

Having said all of this, Shane Hurlbut, ASC is using multiple 5Ds in his action sequences on Act of Valor, currently in post.
He has been making a number of presentations around town, including one caught last week by Robert Primes, ASC, who is also on the faculty at AFI. In a longer article about DSLRs and film that he’s writing for Creative COW Magazine, Robert tells us:
My cherished beliefs were recently shattered by the brilliant young cinematographer, Shane Hurlbut, ASC. Shane shot an extreme action picture about Navy Seals in which instead of actors they used . . . Navy Seals! It was all action – run and gun – bang bang – cut cut – you’re dead. Shane brought 15 Canon 5D Mk IIs to the party and a brilliant rigger who turned them into helmet cams, gun sight cams, self portrait action body rigs, multi camera/multi lens “sports” packages and so much more.
Even better, Shane documented the whole process with stills and superb behind-the-scenes coverage. But best of all Shane talks the talk and tells the tale with energy and sound effects worthy of a young Robin Williams. We’ve booked him into AFI and are working on the ASC.
What totally blew my mind was the speed and ingenuity with which he could grab multiple simultaneous immersive angles. While it may not be the best kit for Meryl’s impassioned monologues, when the action producers and directors see this stuff they’re going to cream their knickers!
Bob has been a DP for 40-ish years. He was the second guy to shoot with the F900, after George Lucas. He knows what he’s looking at – and he’s loving the 5D for explosive action.
So there you go.

Apple said 1.5 FCP seats last August. Steve has already said that there will be an “awesome” FCS release late in the year – very VERY rare of him to do anything of the sort. So I suspect that the growth rate will slow way down this year…but in any case, 2 million is breathing down our necks.
And remember when they said that HD would let us raise our rates? Wrong. At least pretty quickly. Prices started dropping faster than ever right about then.
So, underscoring all of the above, hide costs wherever you can. If you can get away with a rate even a nickel higher for ANYTHING, raise your rates for EVERYTHING. In this context, I love the idea of doing a little more, but charging more than a little more.
But seriously, always be looking for excuses to raise EVERY rate, not just for one camera. Because for that, no can do I think….

And if you have a PC laptop with USB 3, you can run the adorable Pocket UltraScope! Together, they’re still less than many portable HD scopes with these features….
Not that this necessarily has anything to do with DaVinci, but I still can’t help mentioning this whenever I get a chance. 🙂
