See, I don’t think that “hurt” is noise. I think it’s part of what has become one of the many NEW signals here: trying to figure out which way the big ball is going to bounce. As others have noted, feelings have ALWAYS factored into this. Dramatically changing feelings about the company people FELT most strongly about? Signal. It WILL affect the future of the industry and the people in it. It already has.
And frankly, losing faith in Apple, even if for emotional reasons, becomes a rational consideration. Dig:
You have a finite amount of time and money. You take a piece of yellow legal paper (IT HAS TO BE YELLOW OR IT DOESN’T COUNT), draw a line down the middle, make a list on each side, and “I just don’t like those f*ckers anymore” HAS to factor in. It would be IRrational to give money to people you don’t like or trust.
The only thing that I personally assess as noise here is pointedly personal stuff, but even that is being dealt with far better than this time last year. A post or two and move on, rather than consuming whole threads…or whole days….
Otherwise, the more signals the merrier.
PS. My usual caveat: speaking empathetically about one side of the argument doesn’t reduce my empathy for yay-sayers, and indeed my belief that they represent a majority view. I’m just talking about what constitutes signal and noise. There is no arena of science or technology that doesn’t have a strong emotional component.

I’m sorry man, but very nearly zero. The noise about monitoring, multicam and IO stopped fairly quickly…or not…but the heart of the matter for people for whom its not working hasn’t changed one iota, and may NEVER change.
It has to do with interface, mindset, collaboration, and a jillion other things. You could actually work around nearly *feature* that was missing from X on its launch, and millions of people did.
Really, how many people bailed on X because it didn’t have multicam or broadcast monitoring? Hardly any. How many have bailed because it broke their basic workflow? Bunches.
I can also point back to the launch event. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY was complaining during that first demo that there was no IO or multicam. Did Apple even mention that?
But go back to the very first threads in this forum — fully a third of the posts being made DURING THE EVENT were full of abject horror. Some of those people came around, some people joined the horror camp….but the overwhelming majority of it had zeeeerooooo to do with bullet-point features, and everything to do with the bullet they felt had just been put in their heads, before they even KNEW about the missing features.

It’s all a matter of scale. 25,000 is a lot of people, but HP’s workforce remains around 349,000. Apple is around 60,000.
I remember when people were saying similar things about Apple not that long ago. For 2002 and much of 2003, Apple stock remained in single digits. For the first part of 2003, not a single month averaged even $8.
Doomed, doomed, layoffs, layoffs, not even the Return of the King can save them, he’s still focused on Pixar, blah blah blah.
This doesn’t even count the 90s, when things were far hairier than that.
HP ain’t gonna pull an Apple. Do you think anybody ever will?
But still, HP is #10 on the 2012 Fortune 500 — Apple is #17!
First quarter this year HP reported $1.5 billion in profits on $30 billion, and while down, that was before any new workstations started shipping. While trading near the bottom of the year’s range, the stock is stable on the layoff news, and consensus still sees 30% growth by the end of the year.
Again, not Apple, but nobody is…and not bad.
They’re gonna be fine.

Kidding aside, this is the most-read forum at the COW.
For you guys that have been here non-stop for 13 months (or 13 years), a lot of FCPX stuff may seem settled….although apparently not. But there are still people stopping in to this forum for the first time every day — there are still nearly a million copies of that thing being downloaded every month, and guess what? It’s causing debate!
As you’ve noticed, though, the majority of the traffic isn’t necessarily about FCPX anymore. It’s a place to talk about everything related to everything, which we haven’t had on the COW in a while. Occasional needless friction notwithstanding, the forum is doing some pretty remarkable things.
Until we can figure out something better, my strong recommendation is to stay off threads that look like ground you’ve covered before. Why put yourself in the position of saying BUT WE’VE ALREADY TALKED ABOUT THIS to a bunch of people that may NEVER have talked about it?
…but the hottest threads right now are actually pretty fresh.
Anyone here cut a feature on FCPX? This one also turned into a great conversation about media management, workflow, and the best approaches to feature editing in general
Editing Scenario started as a query about corporate video approaches using X that covered feature requests, some great examples of X’s strengths, and more
CS is released – so what now? Awesome thread that led to discussions on even more threads about Speedgrade, FCP vs Premiere, approaches to and quality of transitions in the two, and a thread suggesting that PPro CS6 as FCP 8 is, let’s say, optimistic.
Think about it. Let’s say we name this forum The Industry. Why would you go there? Wouldn’t we still need an FCPX Debate forum? Emphatically, yes. And would any of you stop going to that forum? LOL I doubt it.
In the meantime, having this forum, with this name, is leading to some of the coolest threads I’ve seen in a long time.
I think Beatles song titles could be pretty fruitful though.

One thing that drives me nuts — ALL displays are Retina displays, or your retina couldn’t see them.
OR, NO displays are Retina displays unless they are displaying actual retinas.
I hate that name.
Except, maybe it’s named that because the screen is so shiny that you can see your actual retinas reflected in it.

Well, in a LITTLE fairness, the 15″ MBP is a pretty nifty pro machine. I spent years going to FCP groups all over the world, and I saw many hundreds of people build their editing trades around them.
After all, the one aspect of FCP that I think of as truly revolutionary from the beginning is that you could do serious work on a laptop. Hence the mild irony of “no tower = no love for pros” meme. Apple invented an editing ecosystem that didn’t need any towers, and pushed it further than anyone else.
Hence also my thinking that Apple nurturing FCP primarily to sell hardware is…I was going to say “nonsense,” but let’s say “not in evidence.”
Agreeing with your point though that Apple is as canny as any company ever has been about controlled leaks….and this close to WWDC, they’re not exactly leaks as much as sneak previews….

Dennis, Blackmagic has also always been one of the most active companies in the COW forums. Product specialists post regularly and in the the main Blackmagic forum. So while I don’t have any experience to comment on direct support, you can see their participation here.
And of course the folks here know quite a bit, and are available more or less around the clock….
