Jay Rose wrote this excellent work around to do Surround Sound in Sound Track Pro. I suspect surround sound will be in the next version of FCP/STP.

Please read the manual for your Canon XL1s. There should be something that describes a switch to pad the mic inputs.

And you might want/need Flip4Mac MXF (XDCAM) import component. It may work with XDCAM HD or at least soon.

See this link for basic tutorial (hope I’m not breaking a COW rule).

When recording anything, I ask the subject to perform at full volume/they’re loudest. People and musicians will tend to test for you quiet and then blast away or talk much louder when “live.” Adjust the transmitter’s sensitivity first. Then the receiver to make sure it and the recording device/camera input is not being overloaded. Don’t confuse volume control on the last stage with pading down input at an earlier stage. You can get distortion if preamp is overloaded even if you lower the volume after that stage.

[Dave LaRonde] “There is: capture it as stereo audio. Right channel… left channel… life is good.”

The problem is the two channels are then linked. Of course you can unlink them but that gets back to the problem for me. Too many steps to do. Too easy to make a mistake and miss a file. I’d want panned mono files OR pan the monitoring without touching the center panned mono files.

Make sure your audio isn’t getting mixed somewhere preceeding your monitor speakers. Have a look at the waveforms. They’ll likely look different for Ch1 and Ch2. If so, you have a monitoring problem.

BTW, I really wish there were an option that would allow one to capture mono with audio panned left/right instead of centered or at least a way to pan the monitoring without adjusting the clips.

Now if only there were a plugin that did what Ted Turner did to colorize all those black and white movies. It’d probably cost more and take more time than reshooting though.

Although I see an announcement for the Beta of WME I see no link on the Microsoft site. Please do post if you know of it.

[Bob] “Man… who’s your ISP? 15/2 is awesome.”
Optonline. They’re in NY,NJ,CT. For an extra $10 a month you can get 30/2 service! I believe they’ll be rolling out a more expensive 50/50 service! That upload speed would be major awsome for some small video shops. BTW FIOS is moving in to some areas around here and they offer 30/5.

Here’s a great place to find avg speeds of various providers around the world based on actual user speed tests.
    https://www.dslreports.com/archive
Note in the upper right you can type in your zip and see what speeds are like in your area.

You’ll see the optonline ranks 4th and it’ll go up as the continue to convert their system from 10/1 to 15/2 (with no additional fees for the upgrade).
