I’m not to worried about the audio issue due to the fact that we use external wireless mics and since the GL2 has a 1/8″ miniplug input it doesn’t really scare me. Since we are doing instructional videos I (unfortunately) don’t care about the here-infinity depth of field.
It is good to hear that people are pleased with the image quality and the tapeless work flow will be an amazing time saver for our small company.
My next set of questions are now regarding choice of the camera. After some research I’m leaning toward the sony HDR-XR520V and the Panasonic HDC-HS300. The Panasonic seems to be better suited for our work since it has the focus ring. Critical focus is well… critical with the work we do and having that focus ring seems like a huge benefit. Has anyone else used the Sony Canon with manual focus? Is it as awkward as it looks to use the jog wheel?
The other question I have is using the SDHC cards for archiving a completed project. Would these work and are they stable over long periods of time?

I don’t think it’s an interlace problem. The rest of the video is fine except for these few standups at the end of the DVD. It’s not like a scan line shift it’s more of a pixelation shift every second. I’m attempting to put the very end of the video (only the part with the problem) Through compressor again and then plug it into the DVDSP timeline. That is what the previous editor has had to do. However, I’ve never had this problem. I’m wondering if it has something to do with how he set up the project.

This is going to be a basics question about rendering, I’ve been taking a clip and sending it to motion to modified with graphics, After saving it and returning to FCP I then render the newly modified clips, now to me that seems like it should be rendered and done with. Is there another step to rendering these clips that I’m missing? On my timeline it doesn’t show anything else that needs to be rendered so I thought that I could export it directly through compressor from there. However, your saying that I still need to export it as a self contained movie, correct?
I am understanding that I need to take my master timeline and export it as a self contained quicktime movie and then bring it onto a new timeline and then export through compressor, right? I’m sorry for the basic question but I’ve continually been having problems with my motion projects when pushing them through compressor.

I’m not trying to export from motion through compressor, I’ll try to better explain my workflow, I am taking a video clip from FCP and sending it to motion, creating a fairly complex graphic sequence which automatically updates my FCP timeline. This is rendered along with my scene timeline. That scene is then rendered again in the master timeline. So now it’s time to export, yes? Set to DVD best quality 90 min. Everything is great except when it gets to the graphic sequence. It is some of the layers were removed. I have run into bad artifacting when I use to many layers with this computer as well, I have started to nest things and it is helping but… it’s a pain in the ass none the less.
When I take my work home and render/export on my Mac Pro I never have this problem, so I guess my question is, could some of my settings be messed up on the company computer?
I am tempted to bring my machine into work but I won’t get extra pay for it so it’s not worth it.
Also I’m sure your trying to help but your tone seems very condescending. I may just be reading into it (heh heh, I never was very funny) But thanks for your help.

Thanks for the info. I don’t get why they bought this system. Yes, It’s a nice computer for civilians but as a work horse forget it. So I finally got it to render these out flawlessly, it takes a lot of patience, but it is done. I am trying to talk to them about upgrading their computer but…. we will see. What would be a good 3D rendering software for me to start out on? Is there one that is easy to understand yet able to create things that would impress?

Hey Thanks for your response
I was doing some more research on this issue and you are completely correct. My video card is amazingly underpowered for what I am trying to make it do. I found that when I quit motion and restarted the computer the newly reopened project had no corruption or as I called it “Freaking out (for lack of a better term at the time).
I wish I had been here when the company bought their computer because I would have made them buy a Mac Pro, just for the fact that you can easily upgrade the computer as needed. I tend to be more graphics heavy so the little iMac is burning up most of the time.
The Graphics card installed is a ATI,RadeonHD2400, not a bad card but it doesn’t have the memory I need. Can you upgrade these on a iMac?

My knowledge and ownership of 3D modeling software is limited and non-existent respectively. I would love to be using AE but my company hasn’t yet sprung for the program, I could do this at home on my Mac Pro but I think I don’t have the time to take this job home with me. So I’m stuck with the company iMac with 2gb of mem with Motion 3. I have a feeling that it is a RAM issue so unless anyone can come up with a setting I may have incorrect the “should buy more stuff” approach is not an option.
This is my standard sigfile so don’t take it personally “Answer the question presented, if you can’t, don’t bother”
