[Charlie Austin] “And I’m not putting all my eggs in one basket by any means. Apple have said they have a 10 year plan for X and i’ve got no reason not to believe them, so I’m giving it a shot”
I think one of the biggest obstacles that FCPX will have to overcome in getting into large or mid-sized production houses in the future: the fear that apple will pull the rug out from under them.
After years of carving a place in the editing world, FCP Legacy was EOL’d after years of hard-fought acceptance with-in the editing mainstream. A lot of folks had invested time, machinary, and loads of bucks into creating FCP-based editing houses (and if you look at it, it wasn’t that big of a time window from FCP Studio to FCPX).
Once burned, twice cautious. I think that one of the big fears of such facilities is that Apple might just scrap their current editing software with a newer shinier version like FCPXX (a complete new paradigm that does not work with FCPX), and render their investment useless.
Maybe Bill is right and the future of editing is leaning towards smaller or one-man type of operation. Still, there were always be a need for the larger houses (no matter how much of their market share may decline). I think Apple has a long hill to climb to build trust with such operations. The folks at Cupertino may not think it is the worth the trouble.

Now all you need is a Nagra –even though it won’t synch with your Bell and Howell (you’ll just have to fake that in post).

Does anybody here still own a grease pencil?

Ahhhh, c’mon. Don’t you all long for the days of a flatbed that takes up a whole room and weighs more than a pickup truck? A/B Rolls? Scratch tracks? Fullcoat? And expensive work prints followed by a mega-expensive answer print?

[Marcus Moore] “In my own case, when the 2013 MacPro comes out, AND I decide that it has sufficient advantages to merit a switch from my 2011 iMac, then that would be my first MacPro since I retired my G5 Quad in 2009.”
I think for a lot of us, what Apple releases as a MacPro will decide if we stay with Apple at all. Since migrating to Adobe Cloud, if the new MacPro is underwhelming I no longer feel the need to stick with OSX as my main platform.
If it is totally cool, it’s Apple time. I like FCPX for quick and dirty cuts (but not enough to keep onboard with Apple if they screw the pooch on the MacPro). I use the Adobe Suite much more often. And I have to admit I am finding it a bit tiring trying to second guess what direction Apple is headed — but that’s just me.
I’ll still keep my 27in imac around (forever locked in Snow Leopard).

Those areas are beautiful. Love to camp in Kolob Canyon. Utah has such a wide range of geology. They are in Central Utah, not southern, but you should check out Capital Reef National Park and Goblin Valley. The film in Goblin Valley a lot when they need a crazy landscape that looks like another planet.

I live in Salt Lake City, but have spent much time in other parts of the state. Love the Cedar City and St. George areas in southern utah.

Yeah, we are getting hit in Utah also. It is pretty, and I enjoy a good snow storm as long as I have a warm place to retreat.
-
Well, I keep hoping it will gain some traction in Utah, where I am located.
This is for perfectly selfish reasons. Being lazy, I don’t want to slog through the tutorial videos. Being cheap, I don’t want to pay for a class. I am hoping for another editor to do all the heavy lifting in X, so I can pick his or her brain before I leap in.

[Mark Dobson] “Whilst I can understand people viewing it with disdain when it was bought out it has since changed so fundamentally in terms of stability and new features that hopefully some editors would form a different opinion were they to reappraise it.”
Intial reactions often stick whether warrented or not. I think FCPX is still tarred with the same brush (unfairly perhaps)in a lot of ways with the disastrous PR surrounding its release.
