2 words, bourne identity! zoom, shake, jump into windows, cut to random camera angle, zero shutter,. The only rule is 24fps in my humble opinion.

my post was made in the understanding that you have recorded synced sound from your camera at 30fps. the 1% slowdown would not only keep the original in sync, it would also sync to the rest of your final edit and have the added bonus of matching framerates.
Like I said before, either you slow down BOTH at the same time using AE’s timestretch or cinema tool’s conform, or you use optical flow plugins like compressor or twixtor to conform to 29.97.
You may have put a lot of time into the pro tools edit, so compressor or twixtor may be less painful than replacing all the tracks by hand although the rendering time will be very high. I say the time to go either direction is about the same, ironic huh?

Thanks guys, I was stubborn so I checked it out myself. The crazy canon engineers actually compress the high def signal into SD color(601 matrix) I am going to request a feature change for the next camera model.

since you’d probably want to conform the 30fps to 29.97. simply import the original 30fps into AE as a new comp(30) at 30fps, then rightclick timestretch 100.1001001. make a new comp at 29.97 and place (30 comp) in there and render out 29.97.
This will slow down the video AND audio 1% so they both match each other. You will need to re-edit your final product, but everything will sync. also make sure you have AE updated. there was a aif bug.
also you could use Cinema Tools to optically change framerate if you did’t want to change the video/audio speed(unnoticeable) but it could take a long time to render.

.601 clips tons of data. If you shoot with beautiful colors and then capture with 5DtoRGB, you are clipping with standard def colors. I prefer adobe 1998(from canon’s menu) so my skies don’t get deleted, but that’s just me.
Where did you get your info that canon uses .601?

first off Rec.601 is standard def. not only would an encode 16-235 delete data, which a prores encoding unfortunately does(which a lot of people do and completely destroy their video because canon uses a special full 0-255 h.264), but the actual color management comes from the camera’s menu before you go into movie mode. You can do a simple test yourself by switching from sRGB to adobe in photo mode, then go into movie mode to compare 2 video clips of the same object.
all web browsers use sRGB for video/images and again,Y′CbCr is not an absolute color space, it is a way of encoding RGB information. The actual color displayed depends on the actual RGB colorants used to display the signal. Therefore a value expressed as Y′CbCr is only predictable if standard RGB colorants or an ICC profile are used.

faster lens is better low light capability. make sure it has auto exposure correction or your zooms will change f-stops as you zoom in/out. Also you get what you pay for in lenses with anti glare, chromatic protection, stabilization. also consider the pros/cons to primes.You can spend more on a lens than a camera.

also test the demo of primatte from red giant. it has deartifacting(chroma repair), auto color matching, pointable matte editing. really great plugin.

23.976fps with 2 way tinting like red giant mojo or contrasting highlight/shadow tinting or technicolor or purposefully offsetting the white balance. You’d be surprised how many movies are simply an offset white balance.

DSLR’s are in a whole different category than HDV. I won’t get into all the tech crap, but to make it simple, a 5D in an imax looks great, nuff said.
