For future ref, you can duplicate the footage, pull out the color, use levels to crush down the image so it’s mostly black except for the white areas. Then blur this and use the ADD transfer mode back on top of the original layer.
If you want to simulate the starglow effect, instead of a regular gauss blur, do a directional blur to get a horizontal streak, then duplicate this and change the blur to vertical, then ADD/SCREEN transfer mode the whole lot back on top of the original footage. Then you’ll get your star shape. Also try tinting these top layers for the colored effect.

I guess to answer the other question, I would say that a matte painting is one element in a composite. I would never say a matte painting and compositing are mutually exclusive. Unless maybe if the matte painting were the only thing that made up the shot. But in most cases it does not.

I’m just reading off the options I have and there are 3 for NTSC.

There are 3 NTSC options. 8 bit and 10 bit are YUV codecs. Use the NTSC – RGB codec.

In your AE preferences(video output)settings, did the codec get changed? It should be set on Blackmagic RGB.

DV is not uncompressed, it’s 5:1 so it’s pretty compressed to start with, but if you are working with DV anyways, there are shareware timelapse programs that will take your camera’s firewire stream and sample frames from it at an interval of your choice and write those frames to a QT movie.
But if you want the best looking images, I’d do like Duff said and use a controlled SLR still camera.

I just got in front of AE. Yeah, put the lens blur effect on the RGB pass. Then put your depth pass in the comp but turn it’s visibilityy off. Then in the lens blur effect, select it as the “Depth Map Layer” then it should look awesome! Play with the ‘Blur focal distance’ to do a rack focus.
