February 13, 2014 at 3:20 pm in reply to: Moving a mask with 2 movie clips (punching my clone)Not too difficult, but it takes some time. What you need to do is called rotoscoping. You can google it, but the simple definition is that you mask out an object. For this, create the mask like you normally do, but make the line as close to the clone getting punched without going over any of him at any point. Then, where ever your punching clone goes over that line, just create a mask for that part of him. So, if just his arm crosses, create a tight, detailed mask around his arm and manually animate it for each frame as long as it it over the line. Make sure you turn motion blur on and you may need to feather the mask a little. Your punching clone footage is the only one that needs the masks, just set them both to add and make sure the layer is above the other one.

I just did a quick test and I got a decent result by using the liquify to make the shape of the letters on the paper layer. You can keyframe the distortion percentage after you create the shape. Then I used the brush tool on a solid above that to create shadows and highlights as if the area that is distorted was raised (like a bevel) and keyframed the opacity from 0 to 20% as the distortion from the liquify animate on as well. Fiddle with it for a while to get it to look the way you need, I only did a quick test.

February 13, 2014 at 2:57 pm in reply to: Rendering transparent backrounds – file seems corrupt? No, I have never experienced this issue. It could potentially be a glitch.
However, the more likely problem is that you messed something up without realizing it (it happens all the time, even to the best). We are willing to help, but you need to provide us with some more information like your export settings, your comp settings, anything else you think might be relevant. Maybe some screen shots.
Off the top of my head, try exporting a larger file. Maybe that is causing a problem somehow.

That sounds near impossible to do. *IF* I were going to consider doing it, I would need an exact 3d model of the car, detail depending on how big the car gets in the shot, then match the motion of my 3d model perfectly (note: if it isn’t perfect, it will just fail) and then render just reflections over transparency and put that on top of the footage of the car. Assuming everything goes really well, I would be about half sure it would look good.
However, if you’re going to do that, just do the whole thing in CG.

Fractal noise with a really high contrast, detect edges, duplicate the layer, tint and blur the top layer, change transfer mode to add, duplicate the top layer a couple more times, precompose it all, CC Sphere with only 100 ambient lighting, animate scale, add another glow, but a halo around it however you want.
For the implosion and then explosion, color matched, time reversed CC Particle world should work. Some flashes of light, some random smoke elements, and another subtle energy orb and another subtle halo all with animated scale.
Super down and dirty, but that’s it. If you have any questions, ask.

It’s also possible that all those were just drawn on every frame. It would take a while, but not too difficult.

I’m the only video guy at my organization and right now, we could never afford any of those videos. It isn’t just the monetary cost, but the time and the people it takes to be in the videos. The reason that those 2d videos are popular is because they can be made by one guy sitting in a room by himself with a computer and after effects. It doesn’t take a lot of effort by a lot of people, just one.

Thanks Mark, that’s great advice that I never would have thought of. I’ll try and see what I can do.
I wish I could create a cg version, but I’m not skilled in that area. I’ve messed with blender a little but I can’t do much.
Also, Steve, thanks for your advice. I found what I was looking for on ebay, but something that can hold the weight of the trophy is around 50 bucks and ships from China and takes a week or three to get here. I’m handy enough to create my own, but I don’t have to tools myself and no friends nearby who would have any. I’ll see if I can get my boss to bite, but I’m not sure I have the time to wait.

You’re on a mac, that likely is the issue. There is a setting that forces AE to use the f# keys instead of the system using them for their alternative uses, like volume, play/pause, etc.
You can also press fn + F9, that’s what I do because I use the volume keys more than the F9.

First impression: that would be very difficult. Lots of factors to consider here though. Do objects or people move in front of her? Is the camera moving? do you have a background plate? Do things move behind her?
Biggest question: is this actually the project you are doing, or are you just using the flapping dress as an example of something else you are trying to do? If so, our answers may not apply.
