I’ve always been pretty agnostic. I came from the PC world, primarily because I wanted the OPTION of using FCP, if somebody walked thru the door with a project. However, I’m primarily Avid, and it works just as well, perhaps better, on the PC, so I’m probably moving back. Just so much more machine for the buck, especially if you build your own, like I used to do.
And Win 7 really is the best MS OS ever. It’s fast, stable, and so well supported by 3rd party manufacturers.

Actually, I’m mostly belly-aching. It’s working fine on my laptop, and I’m enjoying it. However, it doesn’t want to play well on my big machine, so I rolled it back. When I get a free weekend, without the wife giving me a bunch of honey-dos, I’ll do a total wipe of the drive and start from scratch. I’m sure with a clean install it’ll be fine, and I’m looking forward to playing with it more.
The things that’s got me MOST tweaked is that apparently there are no official CUDA drivers from nVidia for Lion? Can this be true? If so, it’s that sort of thing that’s got me considering a move back to the PC world more than anything.

Well, it’s nice to hear somebody’s having a positive experience. I, on the other hand, as a long-time Avid user and fan am having nothing but issues with MC6 and Lion. Strongly feeling the urge to jump back to the PC world after I use this MacPro up in a year or two.

Unless you’re trying to find a working and supported CUDA driver for Lion. I’m getting fed up with Apple, and will most definitely be transitioning BACK to Win 7 after I use up this latest MacPro.

This is an age-old story; believe me, I went through the same stage coming from Speed Razor, Incite, and D/Vision. I just didn’t get it for a while, and I was cussing it up and down. But as soon as I started to accept “the Avid way” and not try to make it work like the other tools I was used to, it started to click. Now, more than a decade later, it’s the fastest most fluid editor I’ve ever used and I wouldn’t cut with anything else unless somebody held a gun to my head.
There’s a reason that probably 90% of all Hollywood TV shows and features are cut with Avid. It’s fast, it’s robust, stable, and powerful.
Stick with it, and eventually it’s secrets will reveal themselves to you.

Yeah, I don’t like the way these knobs work. If the mixer window is too close to the edge of the screen, you have to jigger around with it to make it work. This needs some work, for sure. I like the old sliders MUCH better. Also, I don’t think you can manually enter numbers anymore. Not at my Avid right now to confirm that, though.

Actually, Speed Razor didn’t have an on-screen monitor at all. Everything was done on the client monitor. It was definitely a different beast.

If it’s working, then keep using it. However, realize that at some point Apple will release an OS which will make it stop working. At that point, you’ll want to be somewhat versed in the alternatives, so you aren’t suddenly playing catch-up with all the other editors who have already made the transition.

As I mentioned, Avid is built on a film editing paradigm, so trimming is integral to the way it was designed. Think of strips of film run through a gang synchronizer which you roll your cuts through while trimming. In Avid, even the black is a “thing” just like film leader. That’s why you can add effects to black space on the timeline, just as you could scribble notes on leader with a grease pencil.
DEFINITELY learn trimming, and you’ll wonder how you ever did without it. You can also do asynchronous trims, ie: trim the head off your current shot, while trimming leader away from the tail end of a music cue, so your cue stays in sync with your cut. Powerful stuff, but you have to get your head around it.
